MOST people are more than happy to participate in the odd charity event but one port worker is going the extra mile – all 214 of them.

Project engineer Sean Cooper, pictured, has been running, swimming, climbing and cycling his way through 2014 in aid of ABP Southampton’s charity of the year, the Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity.

With a challenge set for every month of this year, Sean has already completed a five-mile road run in Romsey, a 10km road run in Winchester, the Bournemouth Half Marathon, a 5km pool swim and a sprint triathlon in Salisbury.

June saw Sean’s toughest challenge to date – the Three Peaks Challenge with a team of fellow port workers.

Team ABP climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 13 hours and two minutes.

In July Sean completed three sections of the UK leg of the Tour de France. He rode 205km and climbed the famous Grinton and Holmes Moss ascents.

Last month he completed the Eastleigh Aquathon in just 23 minutes, and will take on a sprint triathlon in the New Forest at the end of this month.

In October, Sean will run the Bupa Great South Run in Portsmouth for the second time, hoping to beat last year’s time of 75 minutes.

November will see Sean participating in the New Forest Duathlon and in December he will complete his programme by running in the Portsmouth festive ‘Santa Run’.

It was the impact of ABP’s chosen charity of 2013, The Joe Glover Trust, which inspired Sean to act on what he describes as his “12 months of madness”.

Sean said: “The last few months have been a real personal achievement for me, but after seeing the moving presentation that the trust made last year, it just highlighted how a few pounds can make a big difference to these small charities.”

The Countess Mountbatten Hospice Charity provides funding for Countess Mountbatten House – a specialist palliative care service.

The service helps more than 3,000 adults with life limiting cancer every year throughout Southampton and south-central Hampshire.
