Fire crews and Red Cross workers called to Empire View apartments

Residents evacuated after block of flats flooded

A CLEAN-up operation is underway this morning after a high pressure hot water pipe burst flooding a block of flats in Southampton.

Fourteen residents had to be re-housed in hotels over night after a torrent of hot water jetted out on to the first floor and communal area of the Empire View apartments in West Park Road.

Fire crews from Hightown and St Mary’s were called at around 2.45am and spent more than two hours removing water.

Residents described the panic as very hot ankle-deep water poured through the corridor outside their rooms.

One woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "I looked through the peep hole in my door and there was steam everywhere.

"There was one lady in particular who was really distressed. I really felt for her.

"One of our neighbours who was walking around in the water had red feet because it was so hot.

"My daughter was really traumatised by the experience because there was a lot of panic."

It is thought the leak started in one of the flats and affected a number of others on the same floor.

Red Cross volunteers were called in to help look after residents as fire crews worked at the scene.

Those affected spent the night in a Jurys Inn hotel.

This morning First Wessex staff were on the scene to help with with clean-up operation.

A colleague lives here and it is a mix of private and social housing.
It is not the first problem that has occurred with this block of flats.
Drew Smith who constructed the building should be taking responsibility and resolving all the issues.

If the water was hot, why did people walk around in it? Very strange.
I do feel for the woman who saw steam through her peephole, she must be deeply traumatised,I hope she gets the counselling she needs.

The vast majority of Council or Housing Association Tenants are either in work or pensioners.

What a muppet to even comment I live in this block and was affected as we're my children when the whole floor of use flat and intact it whole landing is covered in hot water u hav no choice when told to get out surely that's quite simple and no we don't need compensation we just deserve to have our boiler system sorted and seen as I pay my rent council tax and am a full time worker as well as a full time mum maybe u should keep it mouth shut coz I think it find more than half my block and in employment just because we are housed by the council don't mean we bum of social think before u open it mouth n give it **** opinion

In the medical profession haven't they got set standards all foreign workers have to reach to say be a nurse or a doctor?
is there such a scheme say for plumbers,electrician
s & builders?
or can they just come over here show a qualification not up to the same standards as ours & work?
I don't know who did the actual work but this is now two buildings by different companies where this has happened?
I also know these pipes & all appliances should have been tested before being handed over so who tested them( High pressure water tests can be done)?
I have a plumber friend a builder & my brother is an electrician so I know a little bit about the process

To be fair it doesn't really matter what matters is that its happened it wasn't nice n needs to be sorted doesn't matter who lives there weither they pay taxes or not etc unless you were their n experienced it don't write stupid comments theirs no need for it

In my last post I did say I DON'T KNOW WHO DID THE PLUMBING but as I know there's a lot of migrant workers now working in the building trade I was asking the question what level of qualification must they have to work here so bigoted not really correct is it?
As for I know someone right as I haven't asked those people if I can print their names that's all I can say but the builder friend employs mostly Polish workers so hence my question.
I also asked what happened to the final inspection & the testing of the systems/appliances does this make me a bigot?
My wife is Thai I get on well with the Thai people & I'm not a racist but was just asking a question about skill levels so why does some one who hates this city have the cheek to call me a bigot?

The fact is music is played all day, and in the night, so I can't see why they are at work, weed is consumed in its mass, thongs, bottles, u name it, it's been thrown off the balconies.

Not to name putting on a chip pan and walking out to see your mates, that caused some costs

Slight exaggeration to be fair what people do.in their own flats is up to them at the end of the day something was wrong with a boiler it exploded leaving it to flood the whole of our floorwe have had our personal belongings ruined and have had to stay in a room with only a bed with our children which isnt nice for them regardless of who was in the wrong it has happened stop **** about who is right and who is wrong if it has not affected it don't comment like I was always told if u have nothing nice to sat then say nothing

As I have said before, I don't follow political parties sheeplike. Milliband is completely wrong about the EU but at least he is honest about it, unlike C'moron who knowing that at least 60% of the electorate want the referendum is making statements that will be forgotten if he is unfortunately re-elected.

I live in Southampton, so I can rightly call it a sh1thole. Do you know every single migrant worker employed in the plumbing trade?
