Cameron grilled by workers in Eastleigh

Updated on in News

David Cameron rolled into the Eastleigh by-election today as he attempted to bolster the campaign to get Maria Hutchings elected.

Mr Cameron, fresh off the plane from a trade visit to India, was with Tory candidate Maria Hutchings when they visited Prysmian Cables & Systems in the Hampshire constituency and he opened a new £2 million high voltage lab.

A week from polling day in the by-election triggered by disgraced Chris Huhne's resignation, the Prime Minister took questions from an audience of workers on topics such as Europe, VAT, immigration and benefits.

On the topic of handouts Mr Cameron shared the frustration of one man who complained that alcoholics get more money and if they did not they would not be alcoholics.

Mr Cameron joked: ''I think I have found my next welfare minister here.

''It drives people mad to know that they are working hard, paying their taxes and yet they can see someone on the same street as them swinging the lead,'' he said.

He explained that the Government is now ensuring that work will always pay more than benefits.

The by-election contest, pitting the Tory and Lib Dem coalition partners against each other, is seen as a key test for Mr Cameron in the kind of seat his party needs to win if he is to get an outright majority in the next general election.

Both parties have thrown themselves into the contest, with a string of ministers and high-profile figures filing down to Eastleigh to campaign, but there have been signs that the Lib Dems - who have a strong council presence in the area - have mobilised most effectively so far.

It is believed they have a strong lead in postal votes giving the Tories a mountain to climb on election day.

Meanwhile, Labour candidate John O'Farrell was campaigning with shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg at a day nursery in Eastleigh.

The by-election on February 28 was called after Huhne resigned upon admitting he perverted the course of justice. Huhne - who faces prison when he is sentenced - held the seat for the Lib Dems at the 2010 general election with a relatively small majority of 3,864.

Do you think that Nigel Farage would know a working class person if he fell over one? I doubt that he would. Daddy was a stock broker, and young Nige worked in the City as well. The only working class people he would have met would have been the cleaners who cleared up his mess. Maybe not. Pete, having canvassed for NuLabour (No I did not use that word when knocking doors, only Labour Party) I can only say that there is lot of element of truth in news regarding how all main parties are organising their election campaigns in this by-election. Even some of the hawk eyed national journalists have confirmed that Lib-Dem have got others napping because they already had very efficient campaign team in place, which got into top gear immediately. I am told that main reason Lib-Dems called for by-election so quick was because they knew while their well oiled tried and tested campaign team was already in place others had no such thing; Tories probably had something and NuLabour none at all worth mentioning. Yes, originally I did think that although they were very low in opinion polls and are bound to suffer from Huhne affair’s handicap Clegg has gone for by-election because after Osborne’s budget as unprincipled partners of Tories they will sink even low, so have gone for it while situation may not be very good but because it is bound to get worse. So obviously my calculations turned out to be wrong. Having canvassed for NuLabour I am morally duty bound not to give say anything that may betray their confidence, just as I will never disclose any strategy discussed at your party’s meetings, which Socialist Party has always allowed me to attend. So hardly surprising he found his welfare minister in the audience because of his ability to tar all drunks with the same brush. While I have no intention to even mitigate for those who deliberately abuse the welfare system, but that is only a very small minority. Most people are unemployed because they got thrown on the unemployment heap so are suffering frustrations attached with it due to no fault of their own. If we are really going to cleanse scrounging then why not go after the real big beasts as well. Those who take many times more out of public purse than the small cheats. But their abuse gets covered under nice sounding but highly misleading headings like subsidies and grants often given under the emotive excuses of regional aids regenerations and national interests. Like billions given to bankers and millions to firms like Ford.

Getting drunk and misbehaving is not the preserve of the high-profile Right though is it? The Left has its "characters" too, doesn't it?

I dont spend my time worrying about bills but I do budget and shop around for everything,I actually find this rewarding. You cannot spend more money than you have, that is what I am trying to say,it does not matter whether you are Joe Bloggs or the leader of the country so stop believing that "some other politician" is going to wave a magic wand, aint gonna happen .

A Typical selfish Tory, 'I'm alright Jack' attitude. Never mind those who have had their benefits cut, or their working hours cut, as long as you are OK, they can go and take a running jump. Should your situation change, and you find yourself facing tough times, maybe you will also think that it is wrong that the wealthiest were given a tax cut, while pensioners and poorly paid find themselves taking a cut.

Seems like Maria Hutchings is trying to pull out of more than one "husting" meeting - another organised by 38 Degrees for local people is set for next Tues but Ms Hutchings was trying to avoid attending that one too. The Lib Dems are blatantly lying, saying they're protecting our countryside when you only have to read the Local Plan 2013-2029 that they railroaded in to see that most, if not all, of the planned sites are countryside (though you'll need a magnifying glass to see the most beautiful sites that the Lib Dems are planning to destroy with housing etc). Not only that, but we were misled into thinking the development would only take place if necessary, and up to year 2029, however already several of these developments on some of our most beautiful countryside sites are being pushed through by the Lib Dems (just 2 months into 2013!), including the one standing for election saying he'll working to save our countryside (I'm assuming the Lib Dems mean countryside outside the Eastleigh Borough then!!). Many people like me voted the Lib Dem MP, Borough and Parish councillors in but we won't be voting for them again based on the past year or two's actions by them. They may communicate regularly, but they no longer represent local people and they continually slag off the Conservatives to distract our attention from the fact that they're lying about protecting our countryside (since when have a car boot sale site and former airfield been countryside???). That insults our intelligence. Why doesn't the Local Plan include brownfield sites and empty properties? If we need affordable housing so desperately, stop building business premises that only atttract in people from outside the area - all the housing at Whiteley didn't solve the need for affordable housing; it just brought in huge swathes of people from outside the area to live in the executive housing and huge amounts of daily commuting traffic from outside the area. Hedge End too has had huge amounts of new housing. Many properties have been bought up by local retired people to supplement their income by renting them out, however many tenants come from outside the area, not locals who can't afford the extortionate rents (unless the govt or Council are paying it!). What we need is an independent MP who lives locally and will fight for local people and local needs - sadly the Lib Dems have made sure the election is taking place so quickly that there's no time for the right candidates to come forward). UKIP would get more votes if they didn't just have the out-of-Europe message (eg, why not stay in the EU market, for free trade etc, but leave the legislative and human rights side and deal with those from within the UK). Also, I'd much rather have windfarms than nuclear power stations, especially in these cost-cutting days where safety could be a future issue! All in all, this election is giving us a very poor choice of candidate - not good for any of us.

Reasons for not voting for any of the three trendy progressive liberal parties; ( Cons, LibDems & New Labour) all pro-EU even though it is a very costly failed experiment, all three parties will do nothing to stop the open door imigration policy with eastern Europeans flooding into Britain, all three compete to be the most politically correct, riding rough shod over our traditions and our rich Christian heritage in a bid to look the most progressive by forcing gay marriage on the nation even though their is no demand for it, no need for it, with less than 0.002 of Gays & Lesbians signing up for Civil Partnerships, plus who do they think they are to destroy and undermine marriage and the traditional family that has been practiced in all civilised societies across the world for thousands of years, yet it seems Cameron, Clegg and Miliband know what is best for the British people, all in the name of an unequal equality where some are more equal and others; a mad cap move of social engineering. All three parties have done nothing to stop the false new religion of global warming and climate change speculators and fudged scientific evidence; using this as a dishonest excuse for green stealth tax rises, leading to extortionate fuel, domestic gas & electricity bills where ordinary people can no longer drive their cars or heat their homes, but do any of the above care about the poor, the disabled or the elderly freezing to death in their homes? Have any of them done anything to reign in the greed of the big six energy companies who make massive profits year on year? Also we have the NHS on its knees , unable to come with mass imigration; four to six hour waits at A & E not uncommon before you are seen by anyone! etc etc And yet you still trust these phoney liberal progressives; despite all of of this and much more you are still prepared to vote for them! Unbelievable! If so your expectations must be really low as what you consider to be good government. This cosy club of three needs a shock result at Eastleigh , so for the sake of the nation vote for Diane James & UKIP and give them a wake up call.
