THESE blushing brides cannot wait to walk down the aisle – but they won’t be getting married.

They are just a few of those set to take part in a world record bid among the tins of baked beans, jars of curry sauce and cereal packets at a Hampshire supermarket.

The Brides in the Aisles event is aiming for the largest ever gathering of people in a wedding dress.

Organisers are hoping that more than 750 people will take part at Sainsbury’s giant superstore in Hedge End to break the current Guinness World Record.

Countess Mountbatten House hospice in West End is organising the stunt on Sunday, February 9, to raise funds to meet its running costs.

Pam Bates, from the charity, said: “Whatever shape, size, gender, age and culture, we want to see the aisles of Sainsbury’s filled with brides in the full caboodle.

“We’ve even got blokes who are saying they will dress up.”

Those who already have a wedding dress should arrive at Sainsbury’s at 4.30pm. The store will be closed while the challenge takes place with the final count taking place at 5.30pm.

Dresses can be borrowed from Brides of Southampton, subject to availability.

Hampshire powerboat champion Shelley Jory-Leigh, who owns Brides of Southampton in Portswood, has pledged her support for the charity.

Oxfam Bridal in Shirley, Southampton, is also lending dresses from its collection of more than 200 in return for a donation. Sizes range from 8-36.

People can visit the shop in Shirley High Street from 9am- 5pm on weekdays but Saturdays is by appointment only. Ring 023 8077 3192.

Shop manager Matthew Kilford said: “We are absolutely delighted to support this recordbreaking bid for Countess Mountbatten House hospice. We have a fantastic range of more than 200 wedding dresses in store, as well as accessories such as shoes and tiaras.

“We want make sure that everyone taking part looks their fabulous best on the day.”
