MYSTERY surrounds how a man found lying in a pool of blood in a city street came by his injuries.

A police investigation is underway in a quiet residential road in Southampton after the injured man was discovered in the middle of a road in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A cordon was in place on a section of Andes Close in Ocean Village, Southampton, which was at the centre of a police investigation yesterday.

But it was unclear how the man came by his injuries. A dried pool of blood marks the spot where he was found before he was taken to hospital by paramedics.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: "Police were called just after 2am after a man was found lying injured on the ground on Andes Close in Southampton.

"He was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

"His injuries are not thought to be serious. At this time it is unknown how these injuries were sustained."

One neighbour said he awoke to find the street taped off.

He said: "I think there was an affray, some sort of fight in the middle of the night. I don't know any more than that."

Another said he was surprised at the incident because the area is usually quiet with a lot of older people living on the street.

The cordon barred dozens of tenants from moving their cars or to receive visitors yesterday morning.

Anyone with information that may help police with their investigation into what has happened is asked to call Southampton Central CID on 101.
