NO, you weren't dreaming if you thought you saw the Queen and Prince Philip waving from the balcony of a Hampshire community centre.

They were there on the balcony, surrounded by bunting - but this Royal couple were stuffed with straw rather than the real thing. Their Majesties were the most prominent of dozens of scarecrows created around Alresford as it held its first Scarecrow festival.

It was one of two events that saw hundreds of people turn out to catch a glimpse of the colourful creations that had been carefully crafted by local people.

In Alresford, scores of people spotted Spiderman adorned the side of a house in Broad Street, made by the Cowling family, whilst an apt Hampshire Hog was outside Sole's Butchers. Around the churchyard were Barbie and Ken, Little Miss Muffet and Sunny Jim.

Also getting into the scarecrow spirit were visitors to St John Baptist Church in North Baddesley who were greeted by 17 scarecrows that were made by children at both North Baddesley Junior and Infant School.
