A SHORT strip of road in Whiteley called a “bus gate” could be opened permanently in a bid to curb congestion.

In 2008 bollards were introduced at the junction of Yew Tree Drive and Botley Road in Whiteley, barring cars but allowing buses and emergency vehicles to pass.

But following residents’ opposition and a petition of over 2,000 names, the county council agreed to carry out a three-month trial last year to keep it open to allow better access into the village. During a consultation, 86 per cent of people living in the area said they wanted the bus gate opened permanently.

County support for the permanent opening is set to be rubber stamped on Tuesday.

A planning application will then be lodged with Fareham Borough Council.
