A WINCHESTER University academic has been banned from the road after admitting drink-driving.

Phil Marter, 42, of Bridgetts Lane, Martyr Worthy, was stopped in a Nissan Primastar on Worthy Lane on September 29.

Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court heard that he had 50 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, above the legal limit of 35.

Marter, who pleaded guilty, works in the archaeology department and is a co-director of the current dig at the St Mary Magdalen hospital near Winchester.

Magistrates banned him from driving for 14 months, fined him £350, with a £35 victim surcharge and £85 costs. Disqualification will be reduced by 105 days if he completes a course.
