CAMPAIGNERS battling to make a notorious junction in Southampton safer fear there will be a wave of accidents despite safety measures being installed.

The accident black spot at the junction of South East Road and Kathleen Road has been the scene of multiple crashes since 2011.

This forced transport chiefs at Southampton City Council to install speed bumps on South East Road, and Chapel Crescent  following a 150-name petition by Sholing residents.

But now safety campaigners are worried that the new measures won’t be enough after the latest accident in which a red Mitsubishi Colt overturned after colliding with a Silver Toyota Corolla.

Resident David Poore, who lives in South East Road and is heavily involved in the campaign to make the junction safer, took a picture of the accident which happened close to his home.

He said: “We would not expect an accident like this when it is not a through road. For a car to end up on its side something must have gone wrong.”

Mr Poore also said the set of speed bumps on Chapel Crescent are smaller than those on South East Road, and is sceptical whether they can prevent accidents.

He added: “The accident was a bit of a shock to be honest; it was the first one I have seen for months.

“My concern is the speed bumps on Kathleen Road are too small and they won’t slow people down.

“We hope the accident is just an isolated incident and that once the road is open and the bumps are there people will drive carefully.”

A spokesperson for Southampton City Council said the speed bumps are different sizes because one is on a bus route, which means it has different regulations.

The statement added: “What we have installed is standard for this type of traffic calming.

“As with any new measures we implement, we will continue to monitor its effectiveness.”
