AN aeroplane was forced to make an emergency landing at Southampton Airport tonight after fears a fire had broken out onboard.

Fire and police crews rushed to the airport in Eastleigh at 9.17pm after pilots reported spotting smoke in the cockpit.

Crews mobilised to prepare for a major incident with fire engines and several police vehicles called to the scene.

But the plane executed the landing safely and emergency services were turned back when no fire was discovered onboard.

A message posted on Twitter by Portchester fire station read: "Mobilised to Southampton Int Airport for full emergency landing. Aircraft with reports of smoke in cockpit landed safely."

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said the brigade had been turned back.

Hampshire Constabulary special constables team Tweeted: "Responded to Southampton Airport for an emergency landing. Pilot reported smoke in the cabin. Landed safely."

Southampton Airport has yet to comment on the incident.
