HAMPSHIRE’S newest mass running event is on the verge of selling out – just nine months after being launched.

Time is running out for hopefuls wanting to sign up for the ABP Southampton Half Marathon as organisers today announce less than 300 places remain up for grabs.

Marafun UK, which is organising the flagship event in partnership with Associated British Ports (ABP), has received an overwhelming response from runners wanting to put their bodies to the test.

Now they are warning that prospective participants face a race against time to snap up spaces before entries close.

Nearly 20,000 people are expected to crowd into the city to watch 6,000 runners pound the pavements on Sunday, April 26, the same day as the London Marathon.

The 13.1mile Southampton course and its shorter 10KM sister course start at Hoglands Park and finish at Guildhall Square.

It passes some of the city’s top landmarks including the Bargate, The Common and St Mary’s Stadium, whole runners can take in a stunning panorama of the city after reaching the summit of the Itchen Bridge.

Nearly half (47 per cent) of those setting out are first time half marathon runners – proving that it is not just seasoned athletes taking on the gruelling challenge.

It will also raise thousands of pounds for good causes with participants running on behalf of both locally and nationally.

Race director Chris Rees, initially anticipated closing entries on March 15, but expects to sell out by next week and said: “We are absolutely blown away by how many people have already signed up.

“There is a real buzz in the running community and it is really inspiring people both in the sporting and the business community.

“But anyone who is still thinking about it should not hesitate.

“They need to sign up now because once we are full we will not be able to fit anyone in.”

Half-marathon entry is £31.99 and £21.99 for the 10km route.

Daily Echo:

  •  On your marks: Ensure marks, cracks, splits or the feeling of flatness in trainers are checked to ensure they are the best possible footwear to use on the day. Come to Up & Running to get them checked out.
  •  Get set: Get a set of clothing to run in on the day and wear them for training a few weeks before the race to ensure there are no rubbing stitching or labels and items are not to loose or tight. If running in a vest or T-Shirt supplied by a charity you are running for, ensure you wear it several times before the race.
  • Go: Samples of Go-gel isotonic gel will be handed out to runners at the seven mile water and feed station. Runners are urged to try them before the day, using them on their longer training to ensure they are happy to use them on the day. We have a selection of different flavours in store.
