DETECTIVES investigating an assault that left man unconscious in a lay-by are appealing for witnesses.

The 30-year-old was discovered in Fairlee Road, Newport, with head injuries at about 12.35am and taken to St Mary’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

Detective Constable Victoria Hayward said: “We are keen to speak to any taxi drivers who had a fare from Newport to Ryde between 9.30 and 10pm on Friday, February 20 and Ryde to Newport later that night, arriving no later than 12.40am.

“We’d also like to hear from any residents who may have witnessed an incident between the Southern Water entrance and the entrance to Island Harbour after midnight.”

A 29-year-old man from Shanklin has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He has been bailed until April 21 pending further enquiries.
