NEIGHBOURS have told of the dramatic moments residents tried to save a teenage motorbike rider who died in a road smash in Southampton.

The 19-year-old named locally as Nick Brisland was pronounced dead after the crash in Spring Road, Sholing, shortly before 6pm last night.

It followed a collision between his bike and a Peugeot car and Peugeot taxi close to the junction with Rosomon Road.

A Facebook group set up in the hours after the collision named him as Nick Brisland, a manager at McDonald’s in Hedge End.

Police have yet to confirm the youngster’s name, but said his next of kin had been informed.

Nick and a friend are believed to have set off on their bikes earlier that evening on their way to a bike meet held at Weston Shore when the accident happened.

Joanne Wilbee, 47, heard the collision from her home nearby and said: “There was an almighty smash and when I got out there he was lying in the road. A lady was giving CPR to him and another was holding his hand. He still had his helmet on.

“His friend was standing by there shocked. It’s so sad because he was so young.”

Her neighbour Kyle Maidment, 27, said: “I came out to go shopping saw people were rushing over and were turning him over to give him CPR.”

Nicola Knap, 44, also of Spring Road, saw ambulances and police arrive and said: “We saw all the vehicles and police sealing the road off.

"They were trying to help him for around 20 minutes and tried to do the best for him.

“It’s so sad that he’s only 19 because that is no age at all.”

Motorcyclist Nick Smith was passed the crash scene shortly afterwards on his way to the Weston Shore bike meet.

He said: “There were around five to 10 police cars. We ran over because we thought he was one of our friends.

“It wasn’t very nice at all – I didn’t think he was going to make it.

Both the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and a road ambulance were dispatched to the scene along with a rapid response vehicle.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the 19-year-old male was declared dead at the scene.

Police closed Spring Road for more than two hours while investigations were under way.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information, should call police on 101, quoting Operation Gaspee.
