THE label on a parcel that missed its intended owner on the doomed Titanic liner by just hours has been put up for auction.
The item was addressed to “Marconi Operator, RMS Titanic” and was stamped on April 11, 1912, the day after the ship left Southampton.
The Titanic sank four days later on her maiden voyage to New York, with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.
The label will be auctioned as part of a lot including photographs of the vessel’s Marconi radio operator Alec Bagot and telegraph equipment from the Titanic’s sister ship the RMS Olympic.
It is not known what the parcel contained and bidding will start at £500.
They will be sold on May 30 at the John Nicholson auction rooms in West Sussex.
The item had been given to the vendor’s mother by the first officer of the OIympic, who was a friend.
