A HAMPSHIRE charity manager says the axing of the paper driving licence could be good news for the county’s roads and businesses.

New rules mean the paper licence will no longer be issued by the DVLA and only photo cards will be issued with new applications.

The move is a joint venture between the DVLA and Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) and is part of the government’s policy of abolishing ‘red tape’.

The Eastleigh-based Blue Lamp Trust aims to make the county’s roads a safer place by offering driver training for companies.

Blue Lamp Trust business development manager David Watkins, pictured below, said: “It’s been seen before that employees have used old or fake driving licences to hide the fact that they have penalty points or disqualifications.

Daily Echo:

“This puts businesses at a huge risk because they are ultimately responsible for ensuring their workers are fit to drive.

“This new online system will make it much easier for company owners and directors to check if employees have a track record of dangerous driving or any disqualifications.”

He added: “I would urge any business that is unsure of how to check driving licences to get in touch for help.”

Under UK law, directors and owners of companies are responsible for checking that their staff are driving safely, whether they are driving their own vehicle or a company car.

Companies could face prison if they haven’t taken all necessary safety checks and an employee is involved in a collision.

The Blue Lamp Trust is offering a support service for companies struggling with the new rules. For more information, see www.bluelamptrust.org.uk or call 0300 777 0157.

Mr Watkins said: “Whilst this new online system does make it simpler, some businesses will need help understanding the categories and restrictions on licences.

“For instance, some people may not know that if an employee has an 01 restriction it means they need to wear glasses while driving.
