AN ELDERLY man died at Southampton General Hospital the day after falling at his Hythe nursing home.

An inquest heard how Basil Turner was found by his daughter at Little Haven Nursing Home on April 26 who had brought along his wife Pamela for the visit.

Paramedics were called and the 85-year-old was transferred with a suspected fractured hip.

But surgeons decided not to operate on the retired builder because of his frailty.

In his statement read during the hearing, consultant Christopher Jack said: “I discussed with the family that he was extremely unwell. I didn’t feel he was well enough for surgery.

"Whilst it is very sad Mr Turner passed away it was inevitable.”

He died of a heart attack the following day.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, senior coroner for south Hampshire Grahame Short, said: “It’s very clear that Mr Turner was a very sick man and that he was suffering from both breathing and heart problems and I think that it would be right to say that he would have died at any time due to either of those conditions."
