The fire is thought to have broken out just before 6am yesterday.

Residents say they heard at least two cars speeding away from the scene shortly before the blaze started.

The road was full of fire engines, police cars and ambulance cars, although no-one is thought to have been hurt.

Crews from Lyndhurst, Eastleigh and St Mary's stations were among those who tackled the blaze, whichbadly damaged the two-storey building.

Some of the firefighters used an aerial ladder platform to fight the fire at first floor level.

White smoke emerged from the building but the blaze appears to be dying down. No flames are visible from the road.

The site is situated between bungalows and the main railway line through the town.

Brokenford Lane resident Josh Geddes, 15, said: "I heard what sounded like roaring flames just before 6am and looked out of my window.

"I saw flames taller than the building and thick black smoke covering most of the site.

"Earlier I'd heard at least two cars speeding down the road."

There is no indication of the cause at this time but it is understood no one has been hurt.
