A SUCCESSFUL bid to bring the Tour de France to Hampshire could boost county coffers by more than £100m.

City leaders in Portsmouth are in talks to host a stage of the cycling spectacular in 2018.

Last year Yorkshire hosted the first two legs of the tour and is still reaping the benefits, with the leader of Leeds City Council labelling it a huge success after it netted the county £102m.

Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt said she hoped the event could come to the city and leave a “lasting legacy”.

And she added money raised could be reinvested into cycling in Hampshire to benefit fitness and traffic.
