TWO PEOPLE are in hospital - one fighting for life - after a serious crash on one of the main routes into Southampton.

A cyclist and a motorcyclist were seriously hurt in the collision on The Avenue, between Winn Road and Highfield Avenue at 12.19am.

Emergency services were on the scene and the route was finally reopened just before 7am.

A 22-year old female cyclist and a 22-year old male motorcyclist both received what a Hampshire police spokesman described as “life-threatening injuries” in the smash.

It was later revealed that the motorcyclist received “serious head injuries” and that the cyclist suffered multiple injuries, including two broken legs.

South Central Ambulance Service sent a fleet of vehicles including three ambulances, one rapid response vehicle and an amublance officer to the scene.

Both the cyclist and motorcyclist were taken to Southampton General Hospital.

A spokesman for South Central Amublance Service said: "They both sound fairly serious injuries."

The road was closed in both directions between Winn Road and Highfield Lane for several hours following the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has any more information should call 101 quoting incident number 44160022880.
