A CYCLIST was hurt after a crash involving a police car.

The 40-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with head injuries following the collision on Thomas Lewis Way in Southampton.

According to a police statement, the cyclist's injuries "are not considered to be serious".

The marked police vehicle was not responding to an emergency at the time of the accident on Saturday.

Neither the driver nor the passenger in the car were injured.

The road was closed for a short time whilst police examined the scene and recovered the car and cycle.

The incident, which happened at 12.40am today, has now been referred to Hampshire's Constabulary's Professional Standards Department.

In the meantime, the force's Roads Policing Unit (RPU) is investigating the crash.

Police Sergeant Wayne Voller, from the RPU, said: “We are investigating this incident as a matter of course and we have referred the collision to our Professional Standards Department.

“Like any other road traffic collision, we are appealing for witnesses to assist the investigation. If you witnessed this incident please call 101 and quote 44160045065.”
