TWO inmates at a Hampshire prison have been sanctioned after firefighters were called to deal with two fires in 24 hours.
Firefighters from Winchester and Eastleigh were rushed to HMP Winchester after a fire began in a cell at about 7.05pm on Friday night.
Prison staff put out the fire, which was described as "small", before the firefighters were needed.
Winchester fire station was also called on Saturday morning at about 9.50am after White Watch had their first "shout" of the day.
Firefighters used a pressure fan to clear fumes from a fire which had also been put out by prison staff.
No one was injured in either incident.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “On Friday 27 and Saturday 28 May, staff at HMP Winchester successfully extinguished two small cell fires. The fire service was called as a precaution and were not required to intervene.
“There were no injuries to staff or prisoners as a result of either incident and the prison is running a normal regime.”
