AN INQUEST into the death of a popular teenager killed in a road smash is set to take place tomorrow.

Nick Brisland was on his way to a bike meet at Weston Shore in Southampton last year when his motorbike was involved in a collision with a car and a taxi in Spring Road.

Despite the desperate attempts of neighbours and paramedics to save him, the 19-year old was pronounced dead at the scene in Sholing on April 24.

The inquest into his death will take place at Winchester Coroner's Court on Wednesday.

His death shocked both the scouting and biking community, with friends describing him as a gentle giant with a bubbly nature.

Nick was a former pupil at St Monica Primary School and Oasis Academy Mayfield and a former Southampton City College student.

He was a trainee manager at McDonald's in Hedge End and a member of the Itchen North District Scout Network.

Friends, family and members of the Scouting community gathered to lay floral tributes at the scene in the days that followed.

Tributes to Nick Brisland in the Daily Echo

Previously, Nick's mother Maria Brisland described Nick as the perfect son.

She said: “He was a friend as well as a son. He had a very good sense of humour. He was just an all-round amazing person.

“He was always thinking about me and would always turn up at the shop with flowers for no reason, other than to put a smile on my face.”

Hundreds of bikers revved their engines and sounded their horns when they took part in a bike meet days after the tragic incident.

At least 400 motorcyclists and car drivers rolled out on an emotional journey to Portsdown Hill near Portsmouth trailing orange balloons and ribbons behind them as it was Nick's favourite colour.

Maria, from Hythe, said at the time: "I'm just so overwhelmed I don't know what to say, this is tribute to my son, if you knew him you would understand why so many people felt the need to be here today he was amazing, truly and I can't thank everyone enough for doing this for him."

A week later a convoy of bikes solemnly set off in a huge convoy from Heathfield Road, Sholing, to his funeral in Wessex Vale Crematorium.

The senior coroner for Southampton and central Hampshire, Grahame Short, will hear evidence from witnesses during the inquest at Winchester Coroner’s Court at 12.30pm.
