PLANS for more than 70 retirement flats on the site of a former bus depot in Southampton have been given the green light.

Churchill Retirement Lliving applied to build a three- and four-storey complex with 73 sheltered apartments for the elderly on the former Portswood bus depot site next to the Sainsbury’s superstore.

Now Southampton City Council’s planning committee has given its blessing to the project which will be the final part of the former bus depot site to be developed after the construction of the supermarket and work starting on a student flats complex.

The bus depot closed in 2010, with First moving its operations to a new site in nearby Empress Road.

The new retirement complex, which will be located at the corner of St Deny's Road and Belmont Road, will contain a mixture of 73 one and two-bedroom sheltered housing flats, plus communal facilities and parking.

The Sainsbury’s superstore opened in 2012 while work recently began on a £20 million student flat complex on the adjacent site.
