EMOTIONS were high across Hampshire as people learnt that Britain is to leave the European Union.

While the majority of the county's residents were celebrating, almost half of its residents are disappointed with the referendum results.

Thousands took to social media to express their feelings - including dozens of Hampshire's best-known celebrities.

Brexit campaigner and actress Elizabeth Hurley, who went to The Costello School in Basingstoke was one of the first to take to Twitter at 5.15am. She posted an image of herself asleep after a staying up to watch the results with a celebratory champaigne icon.

Record-breaking sailor Ben Ainslie, from Lymington, however, likened the results to a capsize and Fiona Philips wrote: "Our young people voted to stay in the EU. They are the future. We have let them down."

Meanwhile, footballing legend Matt Le Tissier urged people to move on, writing: "Decision has been made by the majority. Get on with it and do our best to make it work rather than throwing [your] toys of of [the] pram and blaming."
