IT IS not your regular form of wedding transport.
Many couples like horses and carriages, expensive cars and others like to push the boat out with buses, bikes and limousines.
But a Hampshire bride has taken the unusual step of getting to her fairytale wedding by taking one of the most well-known journeys across Southampton Water.
Bride Kathy Porter, tied the knot with Stephen Hogarty after arriving at the ceremony via the Hythe Ferry.
The pair who met through being next door neighbours decided to wed after 14 years together.
Kathy, 56, made the trip to Town Quay after getting on the ferry at Hythe.
She and her entourage of bridesmaids, friends and family then made the short walk to the registry office in Bugle Street and there was even time on the way to get a picture with one of Marwell’s zany zebras which forms part of the city’s Zany Zebras Trail.
She described the journey on Saturday morning as “lovely” even if there was some sway due to the ferry being close to a Red Funnel boat.
Kathy said: “There was a conversation, everybody asked how are we getting there and it was my son Joshua who said go on the ferry and we were praying that we would have good weather but we are here and we are all coming back.”
When asked whether her other half was a fan of the idea, Kathy added: “He loves the idea going along with it, he’s doing as he’s told.
“I had never thought we would get married, it was just a conversation one day that we decided ‘right we are going to do it’.”
Mr Hogarty 49, who works in IT at BAT in Southampton made the trip to the wedding by more traditional means and said he loved the idea of Kathy travelling by ferry.
Mr Hogarty said: “I thought it was a great idea, I think it was good for Hythe as well, they have a lovely service and lots of football fans go on it and it is good to see it get some support.”
The couple who live on a smallholding in Hythe are now look forward to marital bliss but say they won’t be taking a honeymoon as they have horses to look after.
