A SOUTHAMPTON mum couldn’t believe it when she went to take spoonful of her favourite breakfast cereal.

As Andrea Stubbington was about to eat a mouthful of Sainsbury’s Multigrain Hooplas she saw a worm-like object on the spoon.

The disabled mum-of-one, from Midanbury, who has just come out of hospital after a gall bladder operation, said she screamed when the saw the mystery object.

The 46-year-old said: “It was a brand new packet.

“When I went to put the spoon in my mouth there was this thing hanging off the end of it. I looked in the packet and we found something else in there.”

The two brown objects were both about an inch-and-half long and two millimetres wide.

Although Mrs Stubbington said the object looked like a worm with a head, she was keen to have it identified it properly, either by Southampton University or environmental health officers.

“I understand about quality control but how come it never got made into a loop?

“I heard about mice in a loaf of bread years ago but it makes you think – are they going to have to take all the loops off the shelves?

“It’s a hard material. It could have choked someone if you’ve got a two or three year old. I screamed my head off.”

The mum of oneMrs Stubbington, who was having breakfast before taking her 16-year-old daughter to a college open day, added: “It was quite a big day today, but I need it to be identified. It’s a children’s cereal. What would have happened if it was a child?”

A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s said they would be keen to see the object so that they could identify it and urged Ms Stubbington to get in touch with customer services.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Food safety is our priority and we have strict procedures in place to stop this kind of thing from happening.

"We’re sorry that the product wasn’t up to our usual high standard and hope Mrs Stubbington gets in touch soon, so we can make things right.”
