FIREFIGHTERS have warned youths about the dangers of putting lives at risk by wasting emergency services’ time after being called to three separate incidents where teenagers deliberately set alight rubbish.

Crews from Redbridge fire station went to land near Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre in Thornhill Road at 2am today when youngsters used petrol to set fire to refuse.

It came just hours after the crews had been called to another incident when a group set alight rubbish off Warren Avenue, Shirley Warren, at around 9pm last night.

Shortly afterwards teams from Eastleigh fire station went to land off Otter Road, Bishopstoke at 9.30pm when youths set fire to refuse in a children’s play park.

The Redbridge firefighters used buckets of water to put out both burning piles of rubbish, but the Otter Road fire was already out when they arrived.

Eastleigh station crew manager Peter Abbott urged youngsters to think about their actions and said: “It means we are tied up until we finish the job when we could be out doing other calls which could be an emergency.”
