UPDATE: All lanes have now been cleared but delays remain on approach.

Motorists are being asked to avoid a main route through the New Forest if possible following a serious crash.

Emergency services were called to a report of the collision on the A31 westbound near to the Burley exit at Picket Post at 4.17am on Saturday, April 15.

One lane remains closed from Picket Post services to the Hightown turning with police still on the scene.

Traffic reports suggest drivers are facing queues stretching back towards Stoney Cross with the inside lane of the carriageway closed.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokeswoman said: "We were called at 4.17am this morning (Saturday, April 15) to a report of a serious collision on the A31 westbound close to the Burley exit.

"We remain at the scene. Lane one of the westbound carriageway is currently closed from Picket Post services to the Hightown turning.

"We ask road users to avoid there area where possible."
