Burst pipes across the city have resulted in residents being left without water and drivers facing delays caused by emergency works.

Platform Road remained closed today - having been shut over the weekend - as Southern Water repaired a burst pipe which flooded the road and Queens Park on Thursday.

This evening, a spokesperson for the water company said the pipe had been fixed but Platform Road would remain closed until Friday while roadworks were finished.

Meanwhile, on Bitterne Road West, water was seen cascading down the westbound carriageway as teams worked to fix a burst pipe there this morning.

Southern Water confirmed that residents were left without water - however, some residents were displeased they were not warned about it.

Nutan Singh, from Bitterne Road West, said earlier today: "I have been told the water supply will be cut off within 20 minutes and the engineer outside my house said the water will be out for probably around three hours.

"I work from home, I went to drop off my daughter at the train station and when I came back he told me. I didn’t get any text message or phone call warning me about it.

“With this weather, how are they not warning people with a text message or phone call, what if I was in the shower and didn’t speak to him?”

Another woman who chose not to be named said she woke up to a big puddle outside her front door.

Speaking to the Echo, she said: “I woke up at ten past six this morning with no water. When I looked out of the window I saw a big puddle - a lot bigger than it is now - with the cars splashing the water on the driveway.

"I called work to say I couldn’t go to work because I couldn’t even have a shower.”

Meanwhile, the water company also carried out “essential maintenance” in the SO16 0XS area – between Maybush and Nursling - today and as a result it had to isolate water between 10am and 1pm.

It apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their patience.
