With news that Southampton-born Matt Cardle is to return to his roots to appear as Shakespeare in & Juliet at Mayflower Theatre, the Echo looks back at when he was snapped in the city at the height of his pop career.

The X Factor star visited Southampton in January 2014 for the launch of Sport Relief and saw how money was already helping transform lives.

As part of the day, the singer visited the No Limits charity to find out how £105,000 of the charity cash had helped young people.

“It was brilliant coming down to see the chances being given to people who really need it,” he said.

On his first visit back to the city where he was born the 28-year-old met youngsters who had been helped at No Limits in Bernard Street, including a young man who had gone from being homeless to having his own flat and working full-time.

“If the Sport Relief money is helping things like that to happen then there could not be more of a reason to get involved,” he added.

These pictures were snapped during his visit to No Limits charity, which is now based on High Street.
