Plans to upgrade the former home of the engineering genius who designed the Spitfire have been unveiled.
The legendary R J Mitchell was working for Supermarine in Southampton when he created the famous fighter aircraft, which played a key role in the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Now, an application to build a single-storey extension to the family home in Russell Place, Portswood, has been submitted.
A statement accompanying the proposal says the detached property was built in 1927, having been designed by fellow Supermarine employee Harold Holmes.
It adds: "The applicant has recently purchased the property and wishes to increase the size of the kitchen to suit the needs of modern day living for a busy family.
"The existing kitchen is more akin to a utility room and lacks any connection to the main house."

The statement says kitchens have become more of a family space for both cooking and eating, adding: "An opportunity exists to enhance the layout with a simple extension to improve the kitchen space.
"The extension will contain a new kitchen/dining room."
Mitchell lived at the house from 1927 until he died in 1937, aged 42. His widow Florence stayed there for a further three years.
A public notice giving details of the proposed extension has been published by Southampton City Council, which will determine the application.
