Criticism of university for changing prospectus picture to not offend foreign students

6:00am Monday 20th August 2012

Mayor labels uni doctored picture a "blunder"

Southampton'S mayor has labelled a city university's decision to digitally alter a photograph of a female student in its prospectus to please foreign students as “an embarrassing blunder”. Derek Burke was speaking out after the Daily Echo revealed how University of Southampton student Ella Dove had her picture taken for the booklet - but was left bewildered when her shorts were turned into trousers and her t-shirt suddenly had sleeves. University bosses said they had digitally changed the pictures so not to offend foreign cultural sensitivities. But Cllr Burke said the distortion of the images was “a mistake”. Ella, 21, who is studying French and English at the university, told how she had been wearing a sleeveless top and shorts that finished just above the knee when she agreed to being photographed. When she found they had been altered she asked university bosses why - saying she felt like she now looked as though she was wearing pyjamas. She said: “I don't think the clothes I was wearing were particularly revealing and I was not showing any cleavage.” Cllr Burke said:“Students from abroad are in a for a shock if they think everyone in the city never shows any flesh. “The prospectus gives a false representation of life here.” A spokesman for the university said: “Our colleagues in the international office felt that culturally some students would prefer to see more conservative dress, including the coverage of shoulders and knees. “The image in question was altered to ensure that it was fit for purpose in a recruitment brochure.”

Hello; this is a British University in England. "Colleagues in the International Office" should get a life.

I wonder what the ethnicities of the colleagues in the international office are?

Similarly, in the Bahria University of Islamabad, photographs of young women in burqas have been doctored to show miniskirts and cropped tops in order to attract more western students.

So the rights and freedoms that women have fought for over the last century now count for nothing. If foreigners want to come here they need to respect OUR culture, I will respect their culture when in their country.

In places like Saudi arabia it is comon to see censored and doctored photographs but in a brochure for Southampton University? We (and they) have gone too far this time.
This is England, not some backward province in an uneducated society (or at least I thought it was).

A ridiculous attempt at cultural sensitivity gone wrong. What's more ridiculous is the way the Echo moronship have seized it as an opportunity for more trademark jingoism.

What's even worse is the editing of the laptop. That picture is just awful and looks like it's been pasted over using paint!

Ok, so they're pretending the woman isn't showing too much flesh. Phew, modesty is preserved. But hang on, she's still alone in a bedroom with a man, unchaperoned. Hmmmm.....

Awful decision taken by idiots unfortunately.

But once again, the xenophobes on this site have crawled out of the woodwork.

Indeed. Remember, it's some idiot at the University who's done this. Not 'the foreigners'.

Why is it xenophobic to ask that foreign visitors respect our culture and way of life?

Why is it xenophobic to feel offended that whilst people from certain countries expect us to respect their religions and cultures (under threat of death in some cases), they don't feel that it is appropriate to reciprocate this courtesy?

Where in this story is there any indication of people from other countries not respecting our culture? There isn't.

George, I appreciate that this website is your life and that your existence would be meaningless without it but would you try being a little less of a t1t sometimes when you're posting multiple times on every story?

I'm not too worried about the amount of flesh on show but rather that poorly placed image on the lid of that laptop that chap is using. It's got a corner chopped, the image is too strong in colour for the scene and the perspective is off on the top.

BillyTheKid says...

What is embarrassing is the lack of knowledge, with regards to the taking of photographs, displayed by the Echo, Cllr Burke, the university, Ella Dove, and all posters here.

There are laws governing photography and copyright, and unfortunately many disputes have to be thrashed out in the civil courts at great expense.

Generally, the photographer who clicks the shutter owns the copyright of an image, even on someone else's camera. In the above case, where the picture has been taken by an employee on instruction by the employer, with the model's consent, the copyright belongs to the university. With no contract, the university could expect to use the image in any legal way they wished.

However, if Ella Dove decided to sue the univeristy for over-zealous editing that had not been agreed, and that caused her embarrassment, the verdict could go either way, as each case of this type is examined on its merits.

The university should have got her to sign a model release form, giving it full rights to alter and publish the picture in any way it chose.

I could understand if this photo was changed to take clothing off or make either embaressing poses but please why did this ever get to print in the Echo. Is nothing else to look into or has the Echo a hidden agenda?
How many times has the Echo changed a photo in anyway?

To VConcerned :

I want to apologise to you for my rather silly post here. It was supposed to be funny, but reading it again it isn't funny at all - it comes over as just plain rude.

What you wrote didn't make sense to me, and instead of saying so I just took the mickey.

Over the last couple of days I have had the mickey taken out of me by a couple of regulars on this site, and I'm afraid I was just in that sort of mood !

Once again, I am sorry.

Do not blame the Echo entirely for this one.
The story, almost word for word, was run by the Daily Wail at 01:50 yesterday.
I would suggest that the young lady, who coincidentally is a Co-Editor of the Student Magazine, may have passed a copy of said mag (from July) to an Agency reporter who saw an opportunity for a small fee or two.

It's not ironic at all. I knew exactly to whom you were referring, and all I can say, Billy boy, is that if you think a mere reply to one of your posts is "taking the mickey", then you need to get help for your persecution complex.

Beyond that, you're just waffling as usual, imagining you can tell all sorts of things about someone's character from a few posts on a website. Mildly tiresome, but harmless enough.

Your "mere replies" always fall into one of several categories. You are either condescending, indifferent, sarcastic, mocking, sneering, or insensitive. Always negative.

You never examine anything, offer any useful advice, or throw any light on a subject.

Some of us are confined to the house for long periods, through no fault of our own, and like the contact with other people that forums like this offer.

On the two occasions I joined this site, I posted innocent comments that I hoped would be mildly interesting to some people. But the nasty and often vindictive attitudes of some posters offended me. Complaints to the Echo were unhelpful, as they accepted there was a problem but were unable to do much without constant monitoring - something they did not want to do.

so I began fighting my own battles, which has resulted in constant ridicule from people like you.

For me this is a no win situation, unless you agree to back off.
