A SCHOOL is in lockdown and a police search has been launched after reports that a gun was fired on the grounds.

Armed police were called to Highcliffe School in Christchurch to reports that an air weapon was fired at a person working nearby.

Children have been locked inside the building after the incident, which happened at about 12.05pm today.

Police insist the children are safe but armed officers are searching the area around the school.

Dorset Police tweeted: “Police were called at 12.06pm today to reports that an air weapon had been fired at groundsmen working by Highcliffe School, Christchurch.

“No-one was injured. Police officers, including armed response units, are conducting a search of the area. No arrests have been made.

“We would like to reassure parents that there is no risk to the children at Highcliffe School who are being kept safe within the school building.”

Police say a man has been arrested on firearms charges at an address near the school.

An officer also recovered a number of air gun pellets.
