SIX men have appeared in court in connection with an alleged gang rape in Southampton.

An investigation was sparked and police launched a major operation after a 20-year-old woman told police she was raped in a house on Derby Road overnight from Thursday, January 15, into the following day.

Octavian Militaru, 37, Mihaita Palie, 33, and Cosmin Nicut, 19, all face two charges of rape while Radu-Florin Panciuc, 20, Nicolae Ghinea, 21, and Ion Matei, 41, face one charge of rape.

None of the men - who all live at Derby Road - entered any plea at the short hearing at Southampton Magistrates' Court and all were remanded in custody to appear at Southampton Crown Court on February 13.

A 36-year-old man from the city was also arrested in connection with the incident and is on bail pending further inquiries until April 1.

The victim is receiving ongoing support from specially trained officers.

Detectives are treating the alleged attack as an isolated incident and say that there is no cause for concern to the community.
