Adkins: Villa win takes pressure off

Nigel Adkins insists Saints go to Chelsea without any mental scars from their 5-1 FA Cup hammering just ten days ago.

The Saints boss has seen his side bounce back from their heavy defeat at the hands of the Blues in the best possible way – by defeating relegation rivals Aston Villa 1-0 to pull themselves clear of the Premier League drop zone.

That result has really taken the pressure off of Saints ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

The match is a game in hand that was due to be played in December but was postponed due to Chelsea’s involvement in the Club World Cup.

“The FA Cup game has gone,” said a bullish Adkins.

“I thought we did very well in the first half against Chelsea and you can’t deny that but the two goals before half time demoralised us a little bit.

“In the second half Chelsea had to up their game and they certainly did.

“The amount of forward quality talent on show there gave them the opportunity to score some goals.

“But we have put that to bed and I think that was shown (at Aston Villa) by the character the players have gone and demonstrated.”

A draw would give us a point towards safety & pull us a bit further away from the relegation zone. Redknap /Harry reckons you need 30 points to be safe so as long as we don't get hammered I hope we can get at least a draw after QPR's game against Chelsea

I would love to see us get a result at Chelsea, but I am worried that we will face the bacl lash from there two Losts QPR and Swasea. My biggest concern is that we still have not got any new faces!! whay is it the like of QPR can sign some 3 to 4 players and we still have not got any cover for the defence or midfield. COYR's

If we can keep Chelsea quiet for 25 mins their fans will get restless and start moaning, we can hopefully capitalise. If we lose by more than 2 we'll drop a place, so a draw would be fantastic, a win out of this world! Come on you reds, and I will see the away fans there.

Looking back through the last 10 years of final league tables shows that 30 points is certainly NOT enough. Mid 30's at least and preferably 40 should do it.....at the moment we are 2 points behind that target....all purely academic of course!

No lose game. Any point/points is a bonus. Lose and we are still out of danger zone. Only real concern is our GD, but we won't ship the goals we did in our cup match.

I hope the lads dont treat this as a bonus game or have that cup final mentality like they had at Anfield. We dont need to feel like the uninvited guest, we have decent players who can cause Chelsea problems. Keep it tight for 20 minutes and the Chelsea faithful will start to get on players back especially Torres if he plays. We have a nice 5 day rest period before Everton game so lets go for it.

Wouldn't worry about how many players QPR may have signed. Didn't they buy practically an entire squad, during the summer? Didn't do much for them. Better to wait and get the right people in than rush and get players that won't gel or fit in with the rest of the squad.
