Saints close on Forren swoop

by Adam Leitch , Chief Sports Writer 10:51am Tuesday 15th January 2013 in Sport

Saints are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window with defender Vegard Forren expected in Southampton today to discuss personal terms ahead of a £4m move.

The Norwegian international was due to start a trial at Liverpool today ahead of a possible permanent switch to Anfield.

However, Saints have stolen a march by agreeing a fee in the region of £4m with his club, Molde, that has been accepted.

Liverpool have told Molde that they don’t intend on matching that bid and so the trial has been cancelled.

Forren was staying on Merseyside last night in preparation for the now aborted trial but is now diverting to Southampton with his agent for talks over personal terms and a medical.

If all goes well then the deal is expected to be completed quickly, albeit probably not in time for Forren to feature against Chelsea tomorrow night.

Saints’ interest has been confirmed by Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who admitted earlier today that the Norwegian club had accepted a bid for the player, who has also been linked with Everton and Reading.

"There have been many inquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer," the former Manchester United striker told Norwegian newspaper Romsdals Budstikke.

"It was very interesting for us and Vegard. We are more or less agreed with the club, but nothing is a hundred percent confirmed.

"Molde is close to a deal, so we'll see if this is something that all parties will go with."

It comes as no surprise as Saints look to bolster the centre of their defence that was already thin on numbers before the injury to Jose Fonte which could sideline him for up to six weeks.

Forren, who won the first of his five international caps in January 2012 and has over 150 appearances for Molde under his belt, was scouted in person at least twice by Everton manager David Moyes recently.

Fulham and Belgian side Club Brugge were also linked with a move for the defender with the latter being turned down due to Forren’s desire to play in the Premier League.

“For me the Premier League is the best place to play football. That is what we are working towards now if there is something there,” he said.

“I want to go to a club where I feel that I am focused on. It must be possible to play regularly throughout the season.

“Playing in the Premier League would of course be a big challenge if I get the chance. It’s a different pace of football. But I have developed a lot through good experiences in the Europa League and with the national team. It gives me confidence that I can perform in the Premier League.”

The question surely is:- how long has he been on the radar or is this a quick fix move to cover Fonte's injury? If the latter we can dream on about also capturing Astori. If this was to happen once Shaw is fully fit then it must be that Saints should have a very strong defence capable of handling and keping at bay most of the Premiership's teams.

Not a good sign when he's only played for Molde. Liverpool wouldn't match £4m because he's worth less so we might have overpayed for an average player. Couple thoughts - Ole Gunnner SOlskaer, his manager, said "he's good enough to play for United", which is good enough for me, but with them already having a full set of centre backs he's not going to get a game there, which explains why they haven't looked at him. From everything I've read he sounds an excellent prospect, and I think he'll be a brilliant signing. Him & Fonte are going to be a great combination.

Great - we're in biusiness. I was hoping for Fredrik the Red, the FC Oslo centre-back whose direct ancestor was Eric the Red, who discovered Greenland in 970AD. But this young Viking will add some much needed brutality to our defence. He will also help bring on Spiderman, who has all the makings of a good hatchet man in defence, but lacks the raiding qualities of the Norwegians. Presume he'll take a while to get up to speed (doesn't the Norwegian league have a long winter break?) - and he'll need to adjust to our culture which doesn't really accommodate rape, pillage and plunder. Hopefully, we'll get an update from Norwegian Saint later.

The difference is they need to tweek their sides, we are still building. It may be the 4million is not out of their budget, yet if they are going to bring in other players may take them outside that budget. Their need for a centre half may not be as critical as ours. Also going for Forren may also leave room for other transfers, which may not have been possible with Astori's Transfer tag and wages. Fingers crossed this guy joins and does the business.

It seems to me that this is instead of the Astori deal, that one looked like it was getting more and more expensive and NC has probably moved onto his next target - Forren. According to a few feeds, we have been looking at him for a few months - along with a number of other clubs - and Claus recommended him highly. He has come here in preference to Liverpool or Everton as he wants first team football, not to sit on the bench. Which is exactly the sort of player we want, young, talented and hungry! What this does mean is that there is obviously funds left for another swoop, likely to be for a winger who can play either side. Lallana is injured and it looks like Punch is off in the summer, so we do need a replacement. Perhaps Tom Ince or Matty Phillips - I would be happy with either, but Ince might be the better long term bet? Thoughts?

All very true. I am told by a contact who knows the Norwegian league well that he is a very good player. Quite technical ( not a Jos Hooiveld type). The only question is how will that measure up in the Premier League. Always think it is encouraging when you hear other good teams were interested. The other teams will always make an excuse if they miss out, so take their comments with a large pinch of salt. Re Astori, I am told it might still happen, but only late in the window. It depends on his Italian offers he gets. If they don't materialise then we would be the best option.

And I guess he know a thing or two, having played with and against some of the best. Would be a good january-buy. If we go for Astori the price is 10 mill pounds, same for Dawson, and 3-4 mill pounds for Forren is far better than 6 mill pounds for Scott Dann. It's extremely hard to get players in january, and especially cheap ones. I would not mind Astori or Dawson aswell though, but I think Forren will be a good buy. Left-footed, good at headers, playing centreback.

Whilst Forren has considered we arent at the top of the table and coming here would be a challenge, going to QPR who are in dire straights may be a very bad move - even Arry admitted getting players to sign up with them would be extremely hard. QPR doesnt concern me.

Forren has great potential. He needs to move away from Norway to take it to the next level - the best young centrehalf in the country right now. If we could grab Thomas Rogne from Celtic (last 6mnths of his contract) we could have the makings of a fine pair of Scandinavian central defenders. Remember what that was like ? :D
PLEEAASSEEE take Rogne. We'll throw in some Haggis for Burns Night as well...........
Why, what have you done to him? Surely he's been pretty decent when not crocked. Anyway, his parents' house is about 400yds from my house, so he's obviously an excellent choice.... ;)

Can't remember him NOT being crocked. He's made of chocolate and I doubt he would last the walk between his parents and your house. Take him about a year as well. Perfect for Saints I reckon............

The club does have money!
NA and NC dont speak either..
It is Molde that has gave out this information, Vegard is on the way to Southampton and even Sky have confirmed it...
supportsthesaints, all of the fans on here know nothing, all of the press know nothing, adkins is not spoken to by NC so knows nothing! the only people who know what is going on at the club are NC, saintlysoul and thebooooorer! bu the way i am being rather sarcastic! if you go and look through other threads you will see saintlysoul and thebooooorers posts and see why! but just to let you know saintlysoul has `inside info` and has been kind enough to pass that on to us all. this info is that the club has no money and NC and NA do not speak to each other. he also knows all about contracts. what you must not do though is directly confront him with regards to his posts, if you do correct him he wil just give you loads of abuse about how stupid you and infact we all are and then try to twist his words to worm his way out of being wrong. thebooorer has an intense dislike of NC and will use any thread to let us know, again he/she is never ever wrong and will react with abuse if this is pointed out!
Do you actually know "SaintlySoul"

I don't think "SaintlySoul" knows anything.. We have bidded 4Mill for Vegard and it has been accepted, If "SaintlySoul" thinks NC has no money and claims he has inside information then he is lieing... All we have to worry about now is QPR's Harry trying to sign him...

In my opinion, he's even better than Brede Hangeland at Fulham. I'm not sure though, if he's up for it from his first kick at te ball. I reckon he'll go straight in, and that's the issue; Will he perform from day one? I think it's about 50 / 50. A few good games in the start gives confidence, and then I'm sure he'll be a great player. Some mistakes could mean the bench, and mybe the last we'll ever see of him. I'm crossing all my fingers for a good start. And ifthat fails, I call out for patience. Cause this player will at some point be a great PL-player, let's just hope it's for our beloved Saints.

I think a massive irony bomb has just exploded somewhere!

On the money point. The club has money but like most successful businesses it is in offshore account where it doesn't get taxed away. It will be in Italian accounts, Swiss accounts etc. it's all legitimate because as a football club, we trade globally so we need to hold account in other countries to pay for transfers. Anyone who might have seen a uk business account for the club which is low on funds, trust me that means we are being smart with our taxes. I would have loved it if he would go to LFC and compete (read; complete) the likes og Skrtel and Agger, but Saints may prove to be a shorter way to the first 11 line-up. Lucky Bastards,

Did someone refer to the ice age here? Blimey over there the country is in an ice age now with freezing conditions and with a economy stood still and going nowhere fast. Glad to be out of it. Too expensive and dying a slow lingering death.

thats awesome I was going to do the clash london calling myself In the end I hope they end up in conference south or lower..... LIKE what happened to luton etc etc..... I also dont think the football league would be that stupid to allow them to be in L2 next year either..... so the pompy fans still have a team even if its crap and so they dont support ours COYR

Great overnight work by Kenny and Tony. I can see this album's going to have more tracks than the original London Calling LP. Talking of The Clash, didn't Chanrai write 'Should I Stay or Should I Go?'

In truth I know little of him but if he is half the player Claus was then that is fantastic. As it stands though - is he the step up we need. Would still like to hear the names Astori Douglas Samba or Dawson COYR
Here here! Claus was truly top draw. Dawson would be a great capture, don't see it happening though.

I don't get why everyone keeps talking about Dawson. He is happy to stay at Spurs, and he is playing atm. Astori looks like an Italian Hooiveld. Look up his own goals at YouTube. Clearly overrated, and they seem to be letting in a lot of goals. Forren has been a champion at Molde for two years in a row, tight in defence, and good going forward.

3.5 - 4 million for someone from a league no better then league one.Is just throwing it down the toilet. Buy premier league experience or dont bother! No wonder Liverpool balked at it. It seems NA is now officially in panic mode.

You don't know what you're talking about. Until you do, don't bother talking. Not many decent PL CB's available on the market. Most of them are overpaid, overpriced and followed by a posse of greedy agents.

such a poor lying post. I know I shouldn't respond but when I see the tripe that drips from your bitter fishy mouth but this kind of post clearly demonstrates your bitterness. When you were up there it was the most amazing thing in the world and apparently you were going to stay there for ever and ever. Because, according to you lot, thats where your club belongs. And now you say this? really? Mind you, I did hear mention on the radio today that a significant proportion of fans from the fishy end of the M27 would gladly give up the cup win in exchange for remaining in the Premiership. Kind of blows all your arguments out of the water. Tosh like how winning the FA cup more times than us makes yours a more successful club. but that's fine. When your joke of a club finally get's whats coming to it and you end up having to start up in the bottom league, the cup wins won't count anyway. Flap your way back to the downmarket end of the M27 my fishy friend. We're on the up and it must really stick in your craw to live with that otherwise you wouldn't come on here dribbling on about us. and do you know what? I don't care if we get relegated because it won't be a disaster for Southampton. We'll go back and rule the Championship like we did last year, lick our wounds and then work on getting back into the Premier League again.
