Saints boss Mauricio begins reign in Spain

Mauricio begins reign in Spain

New Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino says he will focus his attention on the Spanish Primera Division when the time comes to strengthen his squad.

Pochettino was appointed Saints boss on Friday after executive chairman Nicola Cortese took the controversial decision to sack Nigel Adkins, who had led the club to two promotions and into 15th place in their first season back in the top flight.

Pochettino's reign got off to an encouraging start with a goalless draw at home to Everton on Monday in a match largely dominated by the hosts, and the Argentinian admitted he is impressed with the young talent at his disposal.

The former Espanyol boss revealed his project at the club will centre on bringing new talent through the academy, but has not ruled out the prospect of using his knowledge of La Liga to make signings in this or future transfer windows.

"Obviously first of all we will be looking at players coming through the academy," Pochettino admitted.

"Beyond that, Spain is obviously a market I know better than any other and is rich with talent."

Pochettino, 40, also revealed that while he understands English and can speak the language to an extent, he is not yet confident enough to communicate fully in language.

Most of the communication with the playing staff has so far been undertaken by assistant manager Jesus Perez, but Pochettino does not believe the language barrier is a problem.

"Jesus speaks good English, he's very qualified for the position," he said. "Sometimes the language of football is more 'gestural' than vocal."

Good news. A former Argentinian international will have more pulling power to the continental stars than Adkins to be honest. Probably why he was brought in seeing as we've got European ambitions long term. Hovering above the relegation zone with a goal difference of minus 10 shows we need a bit more quality in this transfer window though. Hopefully Forren will make a difference but another attack minded player to unlock tight Premiership defences would be good also. Our bench is sometimes a bit bare of a player that can change a game.

I agree, but the minus 10 goal difference was there after just a few games and we've improved massively of late.
As has been said already, I feel for Adkins but he's gone, so we have to support our new manager and get behind our team. I see a very bright future ahead.

What we need the most is a good left winger. Guly isn't Prem quality, Rodriguez can play on that position but he isn't a winger. Lallana doesn't have the defensive responability to play there, he leaves the left back too exposed.

We could use improvments on the other positions too, but a decent left winger we just don't have so it should be a priority.

We have a pretty good starting 11 but we need a bit of depth. A ball winning midfielder would be on my wish list

That will come at the end of the season. During the next few months he will decide whose contract should be extended and who should be let go Does anyone know whose contract is up at the end of the season. The only one I know is Tommy Forecast who is out on loan.

If one of those gets injured I think we'll start struggling again. Just look at our poor start to the season, and how much we improved when Cork came back. I think another more defensive midfielder would be good, but possibly someone younger who wouldn't mind being on the bench

I think a terrorising winger with a good cross is needed. We've scored very few goals from crosses this season. Puncheon has been great but needs to cut in on his preferred foot as does Lallana. Both very effective but sometimes a good old fashioned Beckham whip-in would be nice! (No, don't buy Beckham).
Maybe a 'fox in the box' striker too. Everton was a good game but we should have stuck at least one chance away and SRL can't carry the front line by himself for ever.

I find it slightly annoying that everyone keeps stating as fact that a foreign manager will persuade foreigners to join us!
Wigan have a foreign manager who signs foreigners and they are below us as they are every season at this stage.
QPR have a manager who talks total bo11ox and they have signed a load of foreigners.
NUFC? Only French signings?
Foreign does not equal good.
A lot of lower level clubs sign foreigners. We signed Guly long time ago!
A good man manager is someone who can work with what he has.
Still be nice if we do get someone fantastic, I won't complain if whoever turns out to be the special one that turns it all into sparkling gold dust and takes us to the next level.
Also very interested in what he makes of Lallana's skills. He probably has only seen him run in a straight line at the moment, show him a video of MLT too! Just so he knows what we are used to!

Much better plan than Newcastle who are filling up their squad with frogs!

Bench is weak, Boruc and Jos deserve huge credit for stepping up and back and performing well.

I am not sure if Steeeeeve, Chappers or Fraser have much of a future at this level.

I wonder where Nigel is//hope he is recovering from the shock and planning his next move.

i think the bass for looking further afield is that decent English players are over priced, and over paid and few and far between.
Abroad the leagues like the Italian and Spanish are struggling financially open to offload their decent players, often have technically superior players (world/european champions) and Mau has more knowledge of these players and can attract them.

I don't think 'foreign' is the key per se, more that MP is well known in Europe and can attract some good players from leagues that struggle for money. Outside Barcelona and Real Madrid the other teams in La Liga get tiny TV revenues in comparison which is how Swansea snapped up Michu so cheaply. We need to take advantage of this disparity in Spanish football money.

This is where we will be at an advantage in the future, as we have the facilities to bring young Britsh players through the system, and even if they don't all stay with us they should be a source of revenue, another plus for Cortese, this is part of the vision.

Ach I The Nooooorwich, Hooper finally sees sense.
You’re just a small team in Cowdenbeath, or was it Partick.

Get on board the Saints bus Timmy Bhoy, guaranteed to win a European trophy before you do next.
Beach B@llocks. You're awake !

Celtic told both your wee club and Norwich to GTF. Did Hoops say something I've missed or are you just back to your delusional best ?

I think the Saints bus just crashed. Probably a loose nut behind the wheel.

More chance of us winning an ENGLISH trophy before you do. More chance of Cowdenbeath winning a European one before you do that either !

No, I was just curious if you've got some sort of connection to Southampton that led you to post stuff on here or whether you do in fact trawl the fan forums of every team that one of your players in linked with.

Perhaps I should, but someone please tell me and others who may not know. Thanks.
It's because he keeps spiders as a hobby. It's quite common in France, you know. The other players think it's a bit strange but he's actually got one of the best collections of daddy long legs in northern Europe.

Sounds a bit far fetched...
so its not because he has 8 legs and a hairy back?
Actually, that's true. He also used to play bass guitar for David Bowie back in the days when his band were known as the Spiders from Mars, and the name has sort of stuck.

He's a very talented man.

(But don't mention this if you ever meet him - he's still a bit embarrassed about the outfits.)
I heard it was because he could shoot a web out of his winky-woo.
HEH!
No I think it's just a coincidence that the 2 sound similar. The spider theory is much nearer the mark. I heard that he has a soft spot fo black widows. And sometimes it's softer than others!

Welcome to England. Not sure if your short stay warrants getting an Echo account, but good luck anyway.

Gary, and indeed Celtic, are very well known and respected in Spain. But I guess you would have missed all that during your constant battles with relegation over there.

I agree but the problem is, what happens if either of them are injured? There's no depth to rotate or replace either of them and, boy, did we miss Corky at the start of the season. Life without Spiderman would also be pretty hard. A spare one of them could be very handy.

Consistency is still a problem and as such the player would benefit more from a coach with more time to dedicate to his progress.

As for Southampton, the player is very familiar with Mauricio Pochettino who trained him when they were both at Espanyol.

Developing into a key player during his short stint in Spain, many critics went so far as to say the side became too reliant on the playmaker. Coutinho benefited from having a tough coach who demanded he push himself to the limit. Pochettino, after all, is renowned for his work with youth and thus forged a good relationship with the player who appreciated how much time was dedicated to his improvement.'

Sounds awesome but a bit too much like Gaston perhaps?

What we don't do is have the same initial set up as CHELSEA AWAY with JRod and Guly.

We will concede and will lose the game at least 2-0.

WE NEED TO FRUSTRATE MANURE AND GIVE THEM NO TIME AND SPACE ON THE BALL.

Tenacious Fair Tackling and own the midfield.

We have shown already this Season that we fear no-one in this League.

RF-OUR MAGNIFICENT AWAY FANS WILL HELP THE TEAM SETTLE AND GENERATE BELIEF AND CONFIDENCE AT WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE.

We will continue the fight until the final whistle and not sit too deep so that we do not give awaya penalty to Manure profit from a deflected ball.

WE HAVE PACE AND TEMP AND NEED TO TAKE THE FIGHT TO FERGIE AND MANURE.

Our fans are not like the numbskulls aka the Blue Few who go to Manure on a one off outing looking for trouble.

Answer is no. Lambert is a no10 type player, as is Ramirez.
There is a place for lambert, Ramirez and lallana in the same team for sure.
Jay rod is the poucher, but confidence and experience may be letting him down. I think he's good with potential but is he worth £7m? If Adkins signed him he didn't flower in time.
I can see why Adkins got the sack IF he was making signings, hopefully that was the case and is the case with Maurice. Time will tell, cortese should a complete lack of class over the Adkins affair, but I like what I see with the mp.

We could use improvments on the other positions too, but a decent left winger we just don't have so it should be a priority.
Or... we could play like Spain, without wingers, or with just one.

You could have a point, I drove to a mate's to watch the Everton match and was given a can of something Belgian. It tasted great and I finished it quickly. Half way through the second can, I took a look at the cans - 12%!!! Heck! I thought I was wobbling a bit.

So, mindful of the drive home, I stopped there. I made it home okay then, in our somewhat tight garage, I parked the car better than I had ever done before. Brilliant!

I think teaching English could work like that. So, from now on, I'm going to down a couple of cans of Belgian prior to each lesson.

I questioned last year his dediction when caught up in Xmas drink fiasco over baddesley. He's a better player than I 1st thought, and the premiership or better class of player suits him. It's up to him and IMO he could play for another 5 years in premier league if he kept his fitness up.

I do wonder how important losing out on Michu was to Nigel's standing at the club. Just say Saints were first in for him and tabled a decent bid, but he ended up choosing Swansea simply on the basis of Laudrup having more of a standing within the game.

Now imagine being Nicola and seeing Michu hailed as bargain of the season week in and week out and him thinking to himself "If we had a bigger name than Nigel we would have signed him."

It's speculation, obviously, but it would offer an explanation as to why he chose to replace Nigel.

If that's what you're hoping for I think you're in for a disappointing few years. I think it's fairly obvious that we'll be signing very few English players. The plan is for all the English players to have come through the academy and for them to be complemented by the best we can find in Europe.

For what it's worth I think it's a pretty good plan.

No they're not. Everyone is entitled to an informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant.

Could suggest Randy Travis "Pray for the Fish"....

Pray for the fish

Leave them alone, they aint done nothing
Please won't you leave them a little room to swim

Yes, I know, I'm a bit of an old softie and shouldn't be helping the skates out.

It's exciting but if the transfer fees and wages being bandied about are anything near true - 'very cheap' it ain't!
Relative ...... Compared to Championship players at £7-8 million with wages to match .. Look at Michu ??
We were the first to be linked with Michu, what a bummer!

What sort of wages do these imports command? If the rumours are true players like Gaston are on far more than players like Lallana and Lambert.

Yes of course. But to be fair when we appointed scunnys physio that was sort of inevitable. That's why Les Reed was appointed was it not. If you just want a manager for his ability to sign loads of players then it's got to be Redknapp.

He won't ! Spanish football is going through the same finacial problems as the rest of the Country , hence a manager from Spain, to exploit some very cheap Spanish talent ....... Good or bad that's the future , Could be really exciting !

Yes of course. But to be fair when we appointed scunnys physio that was sort of inevitable. That's why Les Reed was appointed was it not. If you just want a manager for his ability to sign loads of players then it's got to be Redknapp.
I'm not sure 'Arry's the man to go to if you're interested in long term success. Is there anywhere he's left without a massive shitstorm trailing in his wake?

Think on that, QPR.
Yes, he will leave QPR in the turd same as he did with us, West Ham and Boremouth. But to be fair he did his best work, his permanent legacy, with the skates.
For that and only that he has a teensy bit of my respect ........ COYR !!!
Oh yes!
They should erect a statue of him like ours of TB, but turn't around running away with money falling out of his pockets...:)
He doesn't need a statue: Pompey serve as a living, breathing monument to his greatness.

Well, sort of living and breathing. For a bit, like.

Can't see anything on twitter to confirm it, but loads of really pssed off LFC fans who can't believe we might do them again.
I've cheered up already! :O)
It seems to be slowly dawning on them that they aren't as big as they were and we're bigger than we were ....... love it ...... COYR !!!
It would still be a massive, massive coup if we can sign him. His options are Inter, Liverpool and little old us. If we pull it off even Nigel's most ardent admirers (and I'm one of them) might have to concede Nicola had a point.

WHU lose 5 - 1 .
When we win 3-0 at MUFC and 1-0 at Wigan...........
What?
Wigan and a lot of teams are going to play all defensive on us just as soon as they see how we are going for it.
What now?
Don't believe we can beat Manure 3-0?
Why not, who have they got for us to worry about?

Our chairman got us a manager he thinks will improve the team.
PFC chairman got a manager who can't spell, count or remember what he did with all that money and a bank account in his dogs name!

As I told you on The Snooze we decided not to do a Chelsea and undermine the new manager and the team despite the medias best efforts to get us to.

Blue, wind your neck in. Only time will tell whether this decision pans out for better or for worse. If the players we are being linked with materialise then I feel the future is bright, it's definately red and white!

Is it just me or is anyone else worried about the pile of players clogging up the payroll without a chance of getting on the bench?
I have expressed concerns in that respect, how many Ryan Dickson scenarios can we afford?
He's gone to Bradford innit. I'm sure more will follow.

You all bottled it with all the media and fan protests and uproar you backed down poor Adkins stabbed in the back twice. Cortesse must be a scary figure after all the posts etc
We were training at Barcelona's training ground today. Where are you lot practising these days? Guy Whittingham's front lawn?
They don't have front gardens in Portsmouth .

Shame. I guess the team were just kicking a tin of sh1t down the street, then. Funnily enough, that what Trevor Birch has been doing for the last year.

Yes he was unlucky, picked up a knock just before the semi final, but has played in the competition and may be at Wembley.

Yes but I think it's only on loan. I understand the point of loaning out players who need extra experience like Martin but not those that are never going to get near our squad like Barnard, Dickson, Forecast, Hammond etc. Why don't we just sell them, they are all good professionals (apart from Tommy obviously) at their appropriate levels.

Metro reports that Liverpool's move for Inter Milan midfielder Philippe Coutinho is in danger of being hijacked by Southampton. The Saints new boss Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the Brazillian and, according to reports in Italy, is ready to meet Inter's £10m asking price.
released on BBC at 13.52 today.
Oh well no doubt we will know if it happens on OS.
Lol but that would be the second player we have taken under Liverpool noses if it comes off.
Put this on earlier, the stumbling block maybe the player is happy to stay where he is.

Apparently the lad refused to press charges as Hazard had apologised, somehow I doubt the FA will be as lenient.

If you log on to this Forum, have a look at the Cortese poll it has 96 for - 4 against in saying that Cortese still has the fans backing.

Don't over play it Osprey...it was playground stuff...the ballboy was a bit naughty...the player wrongly tried to kick the ball from under him...and the lad made the most of it. That is all.

So it's OK to kick a ball boy, off the pitch? The FA rulebook says it isn't and we know the League is good at kicking people themselves.

Will change his name from Eden to Alf?
We all know the nipper was playing to orders, seen it loads of times where ball boys have delayed releasing the ball, this was where the old multi-ball system was mostly good and avoided the problem.

Rule 12 Violent Conduct.
A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball.

He is also guilty of violent conduct if he uses excesive force or brutality against a team-mate, spectator, match official or any other person.

Violent conduct may occur either on the field of play or outside its boundaries whether the ball is in play or not.

Red Card.

The idiot was right in front of the Chelsea supporters too, two crusts short of a sandwich if you ask me, I hope Swansea are warned about their future conduct too, they will deny it but we are all aware of what goes on.

This Poch guy is making all the right noises, I think we're in for some attacking entertaining football. But if wants the the midfielders to play more of an attacking role, he's going to have to buy sb to sit in front of the back four and win a lot of ball. I read sb suggest that Adam & Corkie can do it, no chance. We need a Chris Marsden type, but obviously of a higher calibre.

He needs time, so hopefully the fans still sore over NA's sacking, won't start getting on him.

Just watched the clip of the swansea ball boy incident and as always its mountains and mole hills, The boy was as much to blame and should also have been sent off. Hazard tried to kick the ball from underneath him, he was never even hurt little b****ard. If he would have done that on a sunday afternoon in my local park, it would have been like laying under beechers brook on national day.

Guess who just went to see the boys train in Barcelona :-)

Sadly someone forgot to tell them to open the main gate so we had to look though the grills. Gonna go tomorrow too to see if I have more luck.

It was nice to see Japanese film crew there too. Loads of Catalan school kids (they were about 5 or 6 years' old) were asking if it was Barcelona and I was delighted to tell them all about our great club :-)
