Schneiderlin's the best tackler in Europe

Schneiderlin's the best tackler in Europe

Morgan Schneiderlin has gone from the depths of League One to officially establish himself as one of the top midfielders in Europe.

The Frenchman had only been at Saints for one season when they were relegated to the third tier of English football.

But the former Strasbourg man stayed with the club and battled back to the top flight where he has become a star name.

His impact and importance has been underlined this week by official figures that cover players from Europe’s top five divisions.

They show that Schneiderlin has made 162 tackles and interceptions this season, more than any other player across the five major leagues of Europe.

He also tops the average number of tackles made per game for any outfield player in the Premier League with 4.1 while an average of 3.3 interceptions per match puts him fifth in the top flight.

Schneiderlin’s £1.2m signing in the summer of 2008 was one of the first deals Rupert Lowe completed on his controversial return to St Mary’s.

The midfielder was only 18 when he joined the club, moving away from home for the first time to a country where he knew little of the football that awaited him and didn’t speak the language.

His first season was a tough one as he was thrust into a very young side that floundered in the Championship, eventually getting relegated as the club plunged into administration.

When Alan Pardew took over he immediately spotted Schneiderlin’s potential and went about toughening him up.

Over the course of a season Schneiderlin was turned from a flair player who had an excellent range of passing but was easily physically beaten by the punishing players of League One into an all-round talent.

Under Nigel Adkins he started to develop into a thoroughbred of a holding central midfield player and has flourished the further up the divisions he has gone.

Landing in the Premier League has suited him even better and his partnership with the fit again Jack Cork has arguably proved the catalyst for Saints turning their season around.

Schneiderlin has long since been linked with a move to Arsenal and you can see why Arsene Wenger might be a fan.

But Schneiderlin is a fixture at Saints these days and at just 23-years-old has already made over 150 appearances for the club.

Morgan is totally underated. A superb player who can be the heart beat of our club for years to come.

No mention that he also covers the most mileage in the PL - and can score as well. Must surely be in the French squad soon.

Put simply he is the mutts nuts, if he carries on this way I can see one of the real top clubs coming in for him.

I don't think you quite have the jist of this article - although they do mention something about hardening up - oops that should read toughening up. An easy mistake Confucious!
Him and Corky have been a revelation since they joined up again this season. Morgan is up amongst the best defensive midfielders in the country - but I think his job is made easier with Cork in the team.
I would love to see him score more - like against United - but his role is protecting the fragile back four (in the middle).
We know he gets it wrong sometimes - look at the yellow card count. However compared to many he seems to be able to control the aggression when required.
I guess he will be one of the first names on the team sheet these days along with Guly & Ramirez!!

When we play at Swansea in April the ball boys will need to lock the ball in a safe to stop Spiderman from getting it off them.

SaintMax says...
8:50am Fri 25 Jan 13

I think NA used to get him playing horizontally across the front if the back 4, and a lot of his passes were in that direction, but in the Everton game he seemed to be far more up and own the pitch. One minute taking the ball from their centre forward, the next he was up alongside Rickie.
His value will rocket over the next couple of months.

His yellow card count is up a bit, but I don't necessarily think that it's him getting it wrong. At times, I think he is "taking one for the team" to limit attacking runs. Whilst I'm not a huge fan of the cynical type of play, if it stops goals being scored then so be it.

Stats dont mean a great deal unless they say something you want to here.

Morgan in a future star, he was good in League 1 because he was naturally tallented. He has been good in Championship and Prem becuase he has worked hard to improve.

RESPECT TO THE MAN WHO IS PREPARED TO GET STUCK IN.

RESPECT TO PUNCH FOR UPPING HIS GAME.

We all know how Fergie and Manure work. We have history of beating them.

He taps his watch - the signal fo the midfield to up their tempo and then as a footballing side they pin the opposition in the final third of the football pitch pressurizing and taking pot shots on goals with RVP to smash in goals.

FRUSTRATE FERGIE and when the time comes - hit him where it hurts with a SMASH into the back of their net -to produce the red face and familiar water in his eyes.

HIT HIM where it hurts - he does not ike it UP him.

European sides have gone to Old Trafford and got the WIN. We are showing Eurpean Form - so why not us ???

A visit to the Nou Camp will have done the MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON'S confidence no harm at all at what can be achieved.

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON'S RED ARMY AND WE RULE THE SOUTH.

Lucas and Morgan would put up the best midfield holding wall in the prem- add Coutinho in front of them and we'd run riot.. Good things coming our way... ALL Supposition to date but fingers crossed.

Good on you St Morgan.

supporter I felt very down after NA was dismissed.
The Everton game made me feel a lot better. The players just play for the club it seems.
I then read the Sky article 'Saints masterplan 'on News Now Southampton from Wed 23rd. It made things much clearer.

As for the Liverpool Post oh well who gives a stuff. Wanted Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal, M, Utd, M City, Spurs to get relegated for years as do most who do not support them.
Must grate that we are challenging them for signings. Liverpool has become a floundering antique that has lived on its past for too long. Once considered one of the top clubs in Europe, it now fights to try and be a mid table club. Take out their super striker and Gerrard and Liverpool would struggle to be that.
We maybe plucky underdogs for now, but why do Liverpool delude themselves that they are still one of the big clubs.

Sometimes I deplore the way football creates these divisions between people who have more in common than separates them. Liverpool and Southampton are both proud port cities, both built on the hard graft of their dockers, and both of them share a common enemy in the form of the neoliberal economic policymakers who have run down our trade unions and set worker against worker in their quest to find chearper, more casualised labour. Sometimes I think the people of Southampton and Liverpool should join forces and march on Downing Street and hang the bankers from the lamp posts. That would be the actions of a sane society.

But then I think "We've got Ramirez - ha ha ha" and go and make a cup of tea.

Sometimes I think the people of Southampton and Liverpool should join forces and march on Downing Street and hang the bankers from the lamp posts. That would be the actions of a sane society.

But then I think "We've got Ramirez - ha ha ha" and go and make a cup of tea.

The problem with Liverpool isn't competition from plucky underdogs, but that it's a "has been" club.

Of course the two cities are rivals too now in attracting cruise ships, but they're a poor second on that score. And come to think of it, in all it's history as the top title, Premiership, is one ship that's never once docked in Liverpool.

There was a headline in the news a while ago - "Van Gogh bought for £58m" - and the thicko Liverpool Echo was outraged he hadn't been signed on at Anfield instead.

That said, I do reserve the right to buy my risotto rice from Waitrose. I know everyone assumes that all rice is the same but there's a certain... je ne sais quoi about Waitrose rice that brings an added creaminess to any risotto and brings it up to the standard you'd expect to find in a fairly decent restaurant. It's a bit off topic but might explain why NC is less interersted in the fans ' opinions than we would like. Somebody on Talksport was explaining the new money on offer next season. It works out around £32 per supporter per game. In other words if we stay up and not a single supporter goes to a game the club will be no worse off. I'm sure he would like us to go along to create the amosphere, but NC as I think we all know is looking mainly at the cash.

Lol don't believe anything on twitter unless its off a club's official twitter site.
If its meant to happen it will, otherwise we will be looking at other players whilst all this is going on and NC will come up with a surprise. its the first day this week when things have gone quite quiet. Lots of mind games being played me thinks

How many stayed away in protest? None actually, as you are a fraud anyway, those missing were stuck because of the weather, there was no stay away protest because we are adult and realistic, we had worked out that it would be an empty gesture and futile, rather like your WUM posts.

I'm surprised we're looking at midfielders to be honest. Morgan is sublime and we all know the difference Cork made by returning to the squad. Adam is arguably our best player, many think Punch is player of the season and Gaston just gets better and better. Who do you drop to make way?

Velleity says...

Probably looking for some depth in the squad for the inevitable injuries. It's OK having a good midfield but what would happen to us if Corky crocked himself again?

I always thought Chappers would make good cover for him but he's never been given the chance.

Depth is good but before we worry about depth we need to strengthen other areas.

Do you mean that one on the big roundabout in Urmston? It's alright. All the pubs near the ground are United only (because they're c!nts) so you need to look that far out. or, another way to look at it is to ask yourself what an attacking midfielder should bring to the party, if he is extremely unlikely to ever score a goal, then you look for assists, failing that you look for tackles, failing that you look for marking and short passing. On the last element he can excel, on the first three he is not Prem. Gaston of course will spot the training ground talent of Guly, and we as spectators can see his recent effort which has been superb. But he has to start producing on the pitch to convince most and he is yet to do that convincingly. I am not knocking the fella, I would love him to start banging in goals or assisting but he has to offer more direct threat for most..... my gut feeling is that he will have a quiet 12/13 season, but will stay and will be influencial next season. For me he is still a rough diamond. But I understand why many do not agree with me and its not because they know nothing about football....

i could have been a professional. The trouble was i could only score goals and pass 40 yards to a sixpence. I could not A. tackle, B. head the ball C track back and mark and D. Foul properly ( it always looked like assault).
So sadly... I used the academic part of my brain.... ( some on here will claim that to has clearly failed )

Well, all I'll say (in the spirit of mutual backslapping) is that you and I seemed to be the only ones to believe that Boruc would come good.

RYRIHF!
OI! Do your investigating bit Mr V. Think I mentioned Boruc first.

José María Callejón of Real Madrid has had a Wiki change to Southampton?

Morgan Schneiderlin is a top player and is extremely underrated. His partnership with Jack Cork has been instrumental this season.

Probably just a troll messing about. Lionel Messi had a Wiki change to Swindon Town the other day.

On the other hand, Pochettino was a big fan of José María Callejón when he played at Espanyol, so we may actually sign him considering Real Madrid are keen to offload him.

I understand that there has been official confirmation that your tackle does work, but only for urinati0n, for which you have to be seated to perform.

Other than that - purely for decoration.

give it up kent141 your not a saints ,as for premiership football the away part takes 3000 seats in the northam stand .that leaves 29.0000 and everton came down with 2000 so you can only get 30.000 for a live tv game .so how do you get 4000 .and you wonder why saints fans on here think you have a mentality of a 10 year old
