Pochettino not upset at missing out on Coutinho

Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino says he is not frustrated that the club have missed out on signing Inter Milan playmaker Philippe Coutinho.

Pochettino had the 20-year-old Brazilian on loan at Espanyol last season, and Coutinho was linked with a move to St Mary’s this month.

However, the Inter star is now on the verge of completing a switch to Liverpool.

New Saints boss Pochettino admitted there had been a chance of signing the player, but said it was always an outside shot.

“I am not frustrated about not being able to sign him,” he said. “I knew there was a small chance he would come here, but overall I have not had much time to consider new signings,” he said.

“I am very happy with the squad which is available to me.

“We all know who Coutinho is, and that he is a quality player. However, there are other factors when we want to sign a player.”

They (NC, MP and the panel) have obvioulsy reviewed what is available on the market and decided there is nothing that represents value for money.
Id prefer to get some depth in the squad but I did say 3 weeks back that we would only sign or loan in one CB.
Looks like I might unfortunately be right.

Before the window we all thought a centre back and maybe a new goalie were the must-haves. Well, we've signed a new centre back and Boruc has remembered how to be be a goalkeeper, so we no longer need a new one.

If we do sign anyone else it'l be a bonus, but we're easily good enough to start moving on up.

Couldn't agree more. No problem now in the goalie department, Boruc is looking good and a new CB. Think we have enough quality throughout now to push on

it just shows what a mess Liverpool are in. Spending £4M more than a player is worth. We did not "miss out" on anything. The lad is a multi-million pound flop....Inter must be chuffed to bits !

I think it is fair to say that Saints will still be looking at the Spanish league to unearth some gems but they may not be any big names in this transfer window. Don't believe any of the names being posted around the message boards as it seems there is a lot of bored people out there!

The BBC Sport web-site has an article about "Liverpool taking a gamble with Coutinho", so perhaps we it was for the best he chose Liverpool.

We didn't miss out he was either gonna sign for Liverpool or stay at Milan, he never wanted to sign for us, so it's a big fat MEH!!!! Hope he's the flop he's promising to be!

Pochettino and Coutinho would have presented a massive spelling challenge. I still have to think twice before typing the new manager's name and wonder if it would be okay if we just called him Maurice Potter?

If we had bought him we would have had 3 players all 'playing' in the same position. But we could do with a winger and another striker IMO and given that its looking like we don't have any new players coming in during the window makes it even harder for me to understand NC's rationale for sacking NA when he did.

That reminds me, can anyone tell me if the "ch" in Pochettino is hard or soft?

I mean, is it "Posh-eh-tino" or "Pocket-eno".

(If it's the latter it makes him sound like some pint-sized version of Brian Eno which is just absurd.)

He obviously never pulled any trees up at inter was loaned out and inter made it clear they wanted to move him on . We need someone who is going to go straight into the team and hit the ground running so someone with more experience for me whichever position it is , boruc would of seemed to solved the gk problem , Celtic fans rave about him even if a bit on the whacky side . Let's hope forren turns out to be 4 million well spent , think jos has played well standing in for fonte but maybe lacks that yard of speed at the top level

Funnily enough, there's a court case going on at the moment about a bloke who beat the cr@p out of his girlfriend because they'd read '50 Shades Of Grey' and decided to have a crack at the whole weird 'hitting' thing, but when she wanted him to stop she couldn't remember the 'safe word' so he carried on regardless.

It's a complex issue, but one thing is for sure: never, ever, pick the name of the new Southampton manager as your safe word. You'd die.

Why is everyone desperate for a winger? Imo that's where we've been best this season. Lallana, Ramirez, Puncheon and Guly have all done well there and don't forget there's Chambers and de Ridder AND J Rod, Mayuka and Tadinari Lee can all do a decent job out wide

We've not struggled to get balls into the box this season though. Shaw and Clyne get decent balls in and Adam puts some decent ones in. Granted Puncheon is a bit one footed and doesn't really put any in, his link up play and running by far makes up for that

I am happy with a CB (I hope he is better than what we have). I don't see the point of going onto a shopping spree buying players that don't clearly improve what we already have. I am glad Coutinho is not coming. If we have 10m or more to put on the table, I am sure better players will come in the summer, after we have shown a good run the second half of the season (fingers crossed!).

In Argentina and Spain they call him "Pochetino" and not "Pockettino". In Argentina and Spain, these names are pronounced in the "Spanish" way, rather than the Italian (i.e. Mas-cherano, instead of Masckerano). But they did actually ask Mauricio and he said both pronunciations are fine one is the Spanish one, and the other the Italian one... I personally like "Pochie"

This is a good idea. I've always thought that if EL James had included a bit more about football and given the lads something to get interested in she could quite easily have doubled her paltry 5 billion (subs - check exact figure please) sales of those books.

She could have called it 50 Shades Of Andy Gray, and made it about a misogynist old shagger who has a slightly agricultural approach to foreplay but then spices things up with a few football anecdotes from the after-dinner circuit.

It's a complex issue, but one thing is for sure: never, ever, pick the name of the new Southampton manager as your safe word. You'd die.

Perhaps someone like Retford could advise me - is it feasible to park at the Lowry Shopping Mall in the Quays for tomorrow's game? Is it far to the ground and what time does the car park close?

Personally I'm hoping for 0-0 until the 95th minute (when only 3 mins of extra were added) and County score with a handball that's so blatant the player admits it to the ref but in recognition of his honesty allows the goal to stand.

It's right next door to the ground but it will be busy as fcuk and you'll do well to get out before midnight. Personally I'd park somewhere along the Metrolink line like Sale or Altincham and then get the tram to Old Trafford. Sainsburys in Sale is a good bet. It's free and the car will be ok. There's also an absolute stunner who supervises the self service tills so give them a crack.

A thought from the terraces (Adam Leitch Style):

A lot of people criticised Nicola Cortese for his lack of communication with suppporters. Not as good as a fan's forum, but at least he gave an Interview to address those views.

A lot of people have cirticised the Daily Echo for it's negative reporting. They have not done anything to answer or reply to this. No forum. No reply to posts. No fans meeting. No nothing. They continue to print the same old negative b/s article after article after article. It is the Echo way or the highway.

Before anybody tells me to go elsewhere, I only have one local paper who report on my team... and all I am asking them to do is act a little more responsibly or explain themselves to the fans who are continually confused/upset by what they read. Why should all fans who are unhappy with the Echo's performance have to find another paper when there is no real alternative.

The DE ivory tower approach and the destructive approach to the club and local community which is the effect is bad as anything I have witnessed from Nicola Cortese. While you love throwing stones you too have something to answer for. At least Cortese attempted to bridge the gap.

When is the Daily Echo going to start to be answerable for it's own atrocious not unbiased behaviour and contribute rather than hinder the healing process.

It's impossible that Nigel might have heard before Friday, when Saints officially announced it? Or that Nigel was fobbing him off by saying he knew nothing about it? Or that the journalist was bigging up the strength of his exclusive?

When is the Daily Echo going to start to be answerable for it's own atrocious not unbiased behaviour and contribute rather than hinder the healing process.
so do you blame the echo for the fact that NA learnt he was sacked by watching TV before he was told by anyone at the club ?
That, on the other hand, sounds like b0ll0cks.
oh I see , so the person who told the country first that MP was in and Adkins out was telling the truth then..... but lying about Nigel hearing on TV about it !?!? Thats odd.... So you are saying that in the 3 or 4 hours between the storying breaking and Saints actually telling NIgel face-to-face, its an impossibility that Nigel heard the report on TV ?? Your bookie must love you !! LOL !!!
You sometimes talk sense and sometimes talk rubbish , my guess is that you (like the rest of us) have no idea whatsoever how Nigel was dismissed ............ fact is , he was !
I am just quoting the journalist that broke the story that friday morning.... he broke the story as a factual done deal.... 4 hours before Saints said anything. This is a fact, like it or not. The same journalist stated that NA heard about getting the sack from TV reports of his story. He was not lying in the morning so I have reason to think he was lying at all..... seeing as I heard of Nigel's sacking on TV myself on Spanish TV about two hours before Saints announced it, its reasonable to me that he too found out that way...
Reasonable in your opinion, but still not fact. Could this journo let the earlier scoop go to his head and possibly pushed that boat out a little bit further to sell another story???

I am speculating.... but then again so are you.
"I understand" in journo speak means "I called him but can not quote him". This sits perfectly well with me.

wrong sorry , ch in spanish ( castillian and latin ) is "che" , his name is ( with emphasis ) poh-chet-TEEnoh. always emphasise the penultimate syllabul in spanish
MGRA...you'd best tell Rafa Benitez that. He definately pronounced it Poch-et-eeno.
nah... you can't pronounce the penultimate syll' unless you say the 'chet' part....
I'm not going to argue for the sake of it... perhaps you should take up the issue with Benitez...perhaps he's a Spaniard with a speech impediment.

At least we don't expect a result and it won't be a disaster if we don't get one, any sort of a result would be massive, and anything is possible. Wigan is slightly more important and I know my blood pressure will be through the roof during that one.

so do you blame the echo for the fact that NA learnt he was sacked by watching TV before he was told by anyone at the club ?
Is that a fact or have you been listening to rumour again?

not picking holes in your story mgra but it has been reported by many news organisations that all the sfc bigwigs were called into sms at 7 am on the friday and that the MP rumours had been going `mad` on the thursday evening. so it is possible, however much you want to believe it or not, that NA new he was going before it was on the tv. i dont know and you dont know the only person or people who do are keeping quiet about the whole issue. what i do know is that as it stands you are 50/50 on your exclusives, so as i said you might be right but you might be wrong. however for all our sakes stop bringing it up as fact until you are proven either way. we have all said to a man that, agree or not with NA`s sacking, the way the whole affair happened left a sour taste in the mouth. NA should have been treated better than what we have seen, but again we dont know whats been said or gone on behind closed doors. let it drop for now and when/if the truth does come out there will be enough people on here who will remember what has been said and by whom.

Not bad but ours at Chelsea was more impressive!
Did you know that Nigel Adkins knew he was going to be dismissed, before this game, fact! Well may be, it was posted on another Forum so it must be true.
I heard that yes. Nigel said you are asking the wrong man when asked about the Forren transfer.

But if it was on another another forum then it must be.....F, hey wait a minute.

It really depends on which other forum tbf. I can think of a few whiffy ones, one in particular.

I just said it was reported as fact by the only person who broke the story accurately that morning. So for me I have no reason to treat him as a liar....No one has officially contradicted his statement.... so if its a lie, no one has stated that as so.

Believe me I have spent many hours researching it and have drawn a complete blank, when it comes to a name and a reliable source, saintlysoul was predicting it before the event, perhaps, he can enlighten us with his source, we poo-pooed it at the time, but he was right all of time, I suspect that NA knew about the same time as he did?

Well according to SAF in his interview he says that Nigel contacted him the day before he was sacked and they discussed what was going on at the club. Read into that what you will but personallty, I think it highly unlikely that NA knew nothing and gave many a hint in his interviews.

You are talking rot. You spell Retford's name wrong, then you spell Porchettino as if its something to do with a pig. The Argentine's name might well be Italian in origin (loads of them are) but will have a Spanish pronunciation, not an Italian one, as is the case here. If it was an Italian pronunciation, it would sound like Pokketeeno. Which it doesn't. So there!
