Premier League clubs keep their money

By Simon Carter

Premier League clubs keep their money

PREMIER League clubs’ spending in January topped £120million – well below 2011’s record total of £225million.

Despite the imminent arrival of new riches in the form of the £5billion- plus TV deals that come on stream in August, there was generally more restraint among top-flight clubs.

Unsurprisingly, QPR emerged as the biggest spenders, splashing out £22million – including a club record £12.5m on Christopher Samba, pictured – along with Liverpool and Newcastle.

Both QPR and Newcastle were among the top-three spenders in January last year as well.

Saints’ contribution to the £120m plus total was just £3.5m, on Norwegian defender Vegard Forren.

That was after the club had ended the 2012 summer transfer window as the seventh biggest spenders in the whole of Eurpope.

Saints splashed around £33m last summer as they prepared for their Premier League return.

That was more than Barcelona spent and more than any other English club apart from the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea.

Analysts believe UEFA’s financial fair play rules, which start to take into account club’s finances from this year, and the likelihood of Premier League clubs agreeing to their own spending controls next week, have had an effect.

The picture is not as restrained as last year, however, when only £60m was spent, but is below 2011, as well as the £170m spent in 2009 and £175m in 2008.

Dan Jones, partner in the sports business group at analysts Deloitte, said: “There were relatively few active spenders in the winter window, with over half of this January’s total transfer spending coming from three clubs.

“Winter window activity tends to be driven by the on-pitch competition at the upper and lower ends of the Premier League table.

“Premier League clubs have been relatively restrained in their player transfer fee spending, in spite of the upcoming uplift in their broadcasting revenues of between £20m and £30m each from next season.

“Whilst the clubs’ total spending was £120m, after taking into account transfer income, the Premier League clubs’ net transfer spend was £70m.

“Clubs are now in a reporting period that will count towards the first assessment of UEFA’s financial fair play break-even requirement for international competition.

“Premier League clubs are also considering the implementation of additional cost control regulation at a domestic level.”

Samba at £12m is further evidence of Arrys reckless destructive management style. If he can't make it work, throw someone's else's money at it.

Spot on Redknapp is a crap manager . He only likes to go to clubs where he can transfer deal and take a percentage for his self and then claim to the revenue he can't read .

I'm not saying 'Arry has left a trail of death and destruction at every club that didn't have the wisdom to sack him but, well, if I was a QPR fan I'd be worried.

But who cares? We're off to Wigan to eat pies in the sunshine and support the Saints. As Les Reed would say, it's a perfect day. As he would also say, Pompey are going to reap just what they sow.

And in even better news, kent141/three halves has been banned.

I offer a pint in the Joshua Tree after the relevant home game to the first person to recognise him under his new sign on over the next week or two.

And, to those of you going to Wigan, give them a shout for me. I'll be in the Kings Arms in Shirley trying to shout loud enough for the team to hear me as they stuff Wigan 3-1.

Made me laugh seeing him in his car on Thursday being question by a Sky News reporter when his mobile telephone rang. He said in his evidence at trial that he didn't
know how to text or e mail!!!! Is he really being serious. I'd love to see his mobile statement I bet he was sending numerous texts to agents in January!!! What nonsense!

imo the reason for the lack of spending in the Prem League is that the chairmens are scared of paying the wages, a far cry from when I was a young lad my dad said play good football boy and you can earn £50 a week as a footballer.

He's got to take blame for what happened with odemwingie as well. By talking in the press of how brilliant Odemwingie is it raised the bloke's dreams of playing for him (no idea why - money?) to such a level that he pretty much lost it and in his interview he seemed to think it was certain. I'm surprised West Brom haven't reported him to the league for tapping up/unsettling their player.

exactly! `arry redkrapp is loved by the press because he always talks to them. quote after quote about any player they ask him about "yeah eee`s a wonderful player who i`ve always liked" and his favorite `get out of jail clause` "the chairman asked me/told me about a player he is getting" "nothing to do with me guv! i will never forget his excuse for being arrested for alleged bungs (cleared of course) "the police have to arrest you to talk to you!" and to this day i have never asked a policeman the time or for directions!
and now the PO debacle, wba refused him permission to talk to qpr because they couldnt do a deal, and `arry says "i feel sorry for the lad". why does he feel sorry for him? PO is still a wba player and still earns a lot of money, so does he feel sorry for him because he made PO look a right idiot? the players agent isnt stupid, he wouldnt let him travel unless he had been told that the deal was likely to go through, and wba wouldnt have told his agent that, so where else would it have come from? `arry will leave qpr in the summer when they go down and another club will go to the dogs and i dont feel sorry for qpr fans, they held up banners asking for redkrapp to come and save them whilst hughes was still manager, they got what they wanted and have made their bed!
