Cortese says 'yes' to talks with Le Tissier
8:00am Wednesday 6th February 2013

Saints chairman Nicola Cortese has agreed to hold a face-to-face meeting with Matt Le Tissier in order to discuss their differences.
The pair are famously at odds with each other, but are now due to hold talks in about four weeks’ time.
Le Tissier called for a meeting after hearing comments made about him by Cortese in a recent interview on Sky Sports News.
He contacted Saints just over a week ago with a view to arranging talks, and subsequently received a response via the club secretary, Ros Wheeler.
“I got a call Friday, after I rang them on Monday, saying that he is quite happy to have a meeting with me in good faith," said Le Tissier, who added that Cortese wishes for only the two of them to be present.
“He said he could could make it in four weeks’ time, and it would more than likely be in London."
In his interview on Sky, which was conducted by presenter Jim White during the club’s trip to Barcelona last month, Cortese was asked about his relationship and supposed “feud” with Le Tissier.
The St Mary’s chief said: “You just mentioned this individual. I don’t even know him. He has never met me. I don’t know what his issue he seems to be having with me (is).
“I think any one of the people involved in the past or associated to the club who has been stirring negativity towards me they should probably ask themselves as well whether this is beneficial for the club.
“You never hear me saying anything badly about them. Also, again, because I would not allow myself to characterise or to judge a person I have never met.”
Le Tissier has taken exception to Cortese’s claim that they have never met.
“He flat out lied in that interview,” said Le Tissier. “He said he’d never met me, which was a complete lie, considering I was in the boardroom speaking to him for about 15 minutes before the first (league) game that they [late owner Markus Liebherr and Cortese] were in charge, against Millwall.”
The man voted by fans as the greatest player in the club’s history said he was also prompted to approach Saints after hearing Cortese’s assertion that “Everybody – I’m not excluding anyone – who has got Southampton at heart has got a place at our club.”
Le Tissier said: “That was why I decided to ring up the football club and ask him for a meeting, because I believe I come into that category.
“You should be together as one and you shouldn’t alienate people as he has done.”
Asked what he hopes to achieve from the meeting, Le Tissier said: “I would like to ask him some questions about what he said in his interview, and about what he’s done to some of my friends.
“I would like him to look me in the eye and give me some reasons why he’s done the stuff he’s done.”
Le Tissier particularly wants to address the issue of the treatment of his close friend and former teammate, Francis Benali, who he says is banned from the club.
“If he doesn’t think Franny Benali has got the best interests of Southampton Football Club at heart he’s very much mistaken,” said Le Tissier.
“Southampton Football Club means more to Francis Benali than it ever will to him, and for Franny to be banned from the football club is, in my opinion, nothing short of disgusting.”
Le Tissier added: “His actions are very different from the words that he spoke in that interview, and I’d like to question him on it.”
Le Tissier said he also wants to broach the subject of Cortese’s relationship with the Ex-Saints Association, which is understood to have soured.
Despite their clear differences, Le Tissier believes it is possible for he and Cortese to find a way to move forward.
He said: “We’ll probably never be best of mates, but if he starts treating people with a bit of respect, and I’m not talking about myself – he can treat me how he wants, it’s not going to change the way I feel about the football club – but there are a lot of people that have been affected by some of the stuff he’s done, and I don’t think it’s right.
“If he wants to right those wrongs and start with a clean slate so be it, and as he says ‘move together as one’.”
The Daily Echo contacted the club to offer them the opportunity to respond to, or clarify, any of the points made, but did not receive a response by the time of going to press.

He hits the nail on the head when he talks about the poinsonous atmosphere that Cortese has (probably unwittingly) created through his actions evece we were promoted from League One.
Let's hope Le Tiss can humanize Cortese, and that they both agree to move forward as one. Will all come out winners if they properly reconcile.
Both have done a lot for our club.

MLT the greatest player ever to wear the famous red and stripes, and he gets abuse on here???????
MLT, Benalli, the Echo, national newspapers, fanzine editors,..... the list goes on with parties that have upset dear leader and he has used his power to ban them all.
Something here tells me that the chairman just might be fault.
Time to man up NC, the olive branch has been offered by most of the above.
The nationals pick up on these stories and they'll not hesitate to drag down what is left of our good name.

I very much doubt there will be a job as we are setting up an organisation with European ambitions and we can cast our net far and wide for top pros with that level of experience. MLT is simply not in that league !! He was a talented and gifted player, a true legend on the pitch. But his international experience is next to nil, he has no network of contacts on a european scale. He was also a lazy, often overweight and was a sluggish player for long periods - have we forgotten how frustrating he used to be ???? The good outweighs the bas , but he was not a role model of committed behaviour - he was a role model only with the ball playing skills and on field ability. Some of the time !!
The only role I can see is maybe a role in ball skills training.
He certainly wont have any place in the clubs hierarchy. Cortese won't have that - end of story on that count.
Or is it that he wants an apology and some smiley photos with them shaking hands? I expect that Cortese will provide that opprortunity and he will be allowed to be seen more on match days .. but he will effectively be no more than a living ornament at club functions... at best.
I think Cortese is doing just fine here - opening the door and saying "whats the problem - lets talk" ? Frankly I can see MLT coming out of this looking like a petulant ranting schoolboy, the points he raises about "lying" are just so trivial it's like a tiff at the school gate.
I really can't see what the fuss is about but I think Cortese may score points here and MLT will walk away with very little.

No doubt, NC is a hard man who pays little attention to what people say about him. As such, he's got on with making decisions (and sometimes, I gather dithering and not making decisions) which he feels are right for the 'company' he's charged with running. No doubt he's made mistakes along the way but his record is pretty good. What I think he hasn't yet understood is that it's one thing to make yourself unpopular so as to achieve your aims, it's quite different to make your 'company' unpopular. So, please NC, learn the difference.
As for Matt, just because he is a legend for his achievements on the pitch and a decent and intelligent bloke to boot, doesn't mean he's right to keep up what has become a hate campaign.
In the end, two flawed blokes who deserve our thanks for the many great things they have achieved for the Saints. Let's hope they manage to move forward - as they both say - 'together as one'.
Oh, btw, LOVED the late-night skate banter on the earlier thread. Read it this morning and it had me chuckling.

Cortese cannot control the conduct of former players
Poor conduct cannot be encouraged. like the Jim Steel if he had conducted himself well there would have been no conflict.
Le Tiss and Benali are legends, but there ego's are none of Cortese's concern. He was more focused with returning Saints to the top flight and generally growing the club
I support southampton FC but cannot defend those who feel that they are more important than it because of past glories.
Q: If our club is purchased and Cortese stops being chairman will he be treated with reverence by the new chairman because he oversaw our return to the top flight?
A: No

.
It seems to me that NC has no problem with Paine, Dodd or some of the other ex players Channon, Fisher, Rodrigues etc who all turned up last season.
If the ex players want to HELP in the
plan in getting Saints back to being a top-eight club again, then the Don doesn't seems to have a problem with them.
The problem seems to arrive when the they start out by saying THE CLUB OWES ME (owes me free tickets, owes me for this and that etc).
.
Matty's comments make me think that certain people want a return to the "power wars days of 2006-8" and they found them more interesting than the football.
.
.
For me it would be nice if the Echo were to tell the fans who the other group was that wanted to takeover in July 2009. The Echo on the 8th July 2009 said :-
"Sources close to the group insist they have put forward a solid business plan .... but the group are annoyed that they have already put cash in an account ready .... The Echo understands the group could even be prepared to write to the Football League to COMPLAIN if Liebherr's takeover goes through".
.
Question to the Echo :-
Did that group complain to the FL or have they being using other tactics to try and make NC leave the Club ??

Might the owners wish to sell, having turned around one of the most underperforming businesses in Europe, given it's history and facilities, or might they want a partner to neutralize the risk thus far taken.
MLT is aware of this perhaps , so will Cortese be. Let us hope Katherine leibherr wishes Saints the same goodwill her Father had.
Good things come to those who wait.

cortese is only an employee as well as le tiss is an ex employee liebherr saved our club as did le tiss year in year out on the pitch cortese seems to have total disrespect by banning le tiss from certain areas of st marys as stewards are informed not to allow him access to parts of the ground media not allowed to conduct fan interviews on sfc property solent sky or echo and the comical issue of photographers which he had to back down this club has history and i for one am not going to ignore it or all the people over the years who have loved this club as much as i do
"....... this club has history and i for one am not going to ignore it or all the people over the years who have loved this club as much as i do"
By that, I assume you think that certain people should be elevated above the status of just 'fan', 'former player' or whatever, because the issue here is what 'extras' you give to former 'club servants' and that list is huge.
So, to whom do you apply special reverence? Where do you draw the line?
Personally, ahead of NC or Matt or any of those who have been employed to play a part in the glorious history of The Saints, I'd place those fans who went to either Carlisle or Hartlepool during the two seasons we were in League 1 and those who have ventured all the way to Switzerland for a pre-season friendly.
Anyone who has done two of the three should be given a free season ticket for life and anyone who has done all three should also have a statue built in their honour. Oh, but that's ME :)
See, it's easy to be selective, not so easy to honour all contributors equally.
One day, NC will be an ex-employee. Having done so much to get us back to where we are, how would you honour him? As someone said above, I doubt if he'll expect a single thing.

I would not even meet Le Tiss, NC, he has already blabbed all over here about meeting you and come out with even more ill considered comments.
Lol bet after the meeting it will be all over sky and like always only one side of the story MLT's.
Great player Matt, loved the loyalty and everything you gave the club great respect for that, just wish you would shut up trying to divide the club.
NC saved this club and he has not only brought us stability but two promotions in three years. If it had not been for him Markus would never have bought. There is a notice it says 'engage brain before mouth.' might be worth a thought.

At the end of the day meeting someone for fifteen minutes does not mean you know them. Its just someone you met in passing.
