Harry Redknapp's incredible career

“I’ve never been relegated from the Premier League and I don’t intend to start now.”

Those were the words uttered by Harry Redknapp over eight years ago as he took on the challenge of keeping Saints in the Premier League.

Sitting in a chair next to chairman Rupert Lowe in the media room at St Mary’s, they flowed out of his mouth on December 8 2004.

An extraordinary chain of events had led to Redknapp quitting his beloved Portsmouth and taking over at their arch rivals.

Yet the bizarre marriage of Lowe and Redknapp was to end in an acromonious divorce less than a year later, with Redknapp decamping back to Fratton Park and admitting his time at St Mary’s was one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

For the first time since his departure in November 2005, Redknapp returns to St Mary’s this weekend to take his seat in the opposition dug-out as manager of Queens Park Rangers.

His appearance brings back memories of a script so unlikely it would have been rejected by soap opera writers.

This story, the headline, the whole point is just a wind up! The Echo stoking the fire before Saturday, Redknapps hated at St Mary's as he will be at Loftus Road next season when they're relegated and bust.

The media love him and bill him as the great Harry Redknapp. On face of it he looks to have done pretty well at most of his clubs - results wise. But every footy fan knows the truth, where he left the clubs he was in charge of. Bournemouth - bankrupt, West Ham - had to sell a whole golden generation to avoid going bust, Portsmouth - put out of existence (soon), Saints - bankrupt. See a pattern emerging? Now he is at QPR spending untold money on a band of mercenaries to replace the other failing band of mercenaries in a desperate bid to stay up. They won't and he will leave them...... bankrupt, to add to his fantastic portfolio. The guy is poison, but must be some sort of Derren Brown to convince these chairmen to let him spend all their money, knowing the track record he has.

The fans will probably boo him when he walks out and that will be it.

and thats ALL it should be from the Saints fans. Redknapp managed our club for a short while some years ago. He wasn't very good. That's all there is to it. We don't need to concentrate on history unlike our fishy neighbours. It's where we are going that counts.

Well qpr have 11 games left with 17 points already chalked up. They have one of the easier run ins but still have Everon and Liverpool away and Ars at home. If they win 6 , which will be a minor miracle, they will end up with 35 points. That's not enough and they will be going down with the Redknapp. They then have the massive problem of huge wages and underperforming players in the C/ship.

well put.. but more simplistically how can a man have an account in monte carlo casino in his dogs name and be a fit person to manage a football team.
This man has brought shame on football and gets away with it.. The Eurocops are watching Harry.. They are watching you you are in their little black Ipad.

The Echo has completely missed the point and forgotten to mention that both Harry would love to have Morgan Schneiderlin in his team. Morgan's influence on Harry is plain to see as Harry continues to try to buy players as good as Morgan. Morgan Schneiderlin made no actual comment on this subject but it is always good to have his name in these threads.

Someone told me the other day why he got sacked from Spurs. Apparently the chairman had had this awful time and his wife had got quite ill and he wasn't feeling too clever and Harry bowled up asking for a shedload of cash to spaff on players and the chairman just got so annoyed with him he decided to sack him.

It was a wise move. Isn't it funny how the only club that hasn't been ruined by Redknapp is the one that had the good sense to sack him?

I have never understood why anyone thinks that he is a good manager - patchy success and a string of clubs in a worse financial position following his wheeling and dealing

Enjoyed these posts about Redknapp. Don't credit the idot with too much intelligence. This is someone who believes in his own myth to the extent that at one point in time he thought he would be England manager - failing to see beyond a campaign to appoint him engineered for the media's own amusement. If he was just thick and stupid I could ignore him; but I depise him because he is a fraud and a crook who lays waste to everything he touches and gets away with it. But when we beat them on Sat, QPR wil be almost buried, and so too will the myth of Harry Redknapp.

Harry is certainly one of those characters in football who generates the marmite/vegemite effect.
He is the media darling always willing with a sound bite. You can’t argue that a lot of his teams have played good entertaining football. He has signed a wealth of quality players in his time and he would argue many have them have turned a handsome profit for the club.
Then there is the dark side, touched on already by the posts above. It is incredible that he is constantly given the funds, but more fool them.

He did take us down which was unforgivable with the squad we had. So in conclusion, I hope he has a rather uncomfortable day with his hemroids giving him as much discomfort as the Saints fans.
I don’t hate him but I will enjoy seeing us put another nail in his managerial coffin.

The real reason he didn't get the England job was that during the negotiations he asked for £300 million to buy some Brazilian players.

The FA felt that FIFA might not like this. FIFA confirmed this mainly because Brazil aren't in the EU.

It also didn't help that Harry asked for part of the money to be divided up into numerous brown paper bags and the rest was to be wired to his dog's bank account in Switzerland.

The FA, being shrewd and knowledgeable, decided this was all an utterly ridculous request. They turned him down flat as they thought he should have used the money to buy German and Spanish players.

He's got so much to hate about him- Onl manager in 27 years to manage to get us relegated- and this AFTER the move to the bigger stadium!- He's a skunty-smelling crook from the small team down the road, he's crooked and overrated by the media to the extent the love-in with him for the England job was sickening, and he's won one trophy, bought by invisible money and local charities pockets..
I can't stand the man, and I seriously hope that he, and MOTD cameras pick up on just how we detest him.
