WHITCHURCH United shrugged off Saturday’s defeat at Winchester City to bag a stoppage-time 3-2 victory at Alresford Town tonight.
Danny Phillips was the last-gasp hero, sending the Jam Boys level on points with Petersfield at the Sydenhams Premier summit.
Phillips had cancelled out Dan Fox’s opener in a poor first half for the visitors.
Whitchurch upped it after the break to lead through Jack Garner only for Tom Riddell to level for the Magpies with around ten minutes to go. Holders AFC Portchester went safely through to the Russell Cotes Cup second round by beating Hythe & Dibden 2-1 through Craig Hardy and Louie Castles.
Tom Dunford curled in a left-foot beauty from 25 yards to edge Gosport Borough past Petersfield Town 1-0.
Lymington Town beat Newport IoW 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Southampton Road. Ed Stacey made it 1-1 with around ten minutes to go after Liam Triggs had put Port ahead. Lymo keeper Stuart Williamson saved two penalties in the shoot-out leaving reserve team graduate Pete Hurford to sink the victory kick.
Cowes Sports had a Jordan Browne brace to thank for winning 2-1 at Fareham (Lee Tigwell).
