NEWPORT IoW played more than an hour with ten men but still managed to dispose of Folland Sports 1-0 after extra-time in the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup at St George’s Park.

There was nothing to choose between the sides in the first half with Ashley Jarvis firing a one-on-one wide for the Planemakers and Port’s Aidan Sainsbury having a 25-yarder palmed away by Ryan Gosney.

But Steve Brougham’s Islanders suffered a 53rd-minute setback when defender Jake Younie was shown a straight red.

Follands had chances to win it in normal time, having two ‘goals’ ruled out, Matt Casey hitting the outside of the upright and Richard Gregory ballooning a dream chance over from close range.

Skipper Jamie Barron had an effort pushed away in stoppage time, but the visitors were eventually floored by a set-piece which Follands assistant boss Dave Lewis felt should never have been given.

“Tom McInnes is a decent player, but he does most of his best work on the floor!” said Lewis. “He’s fallen over and the ref’s given a phantom free-kick that never was.”

Iain Seabrook floated the ball into the danger zone where Gosney did well to block McInnes’ header on the goalline. But, as the ball ran loose, former AFC Totton and Blackfield & Langley defender Scott Sampson bundled it in.

Lewis, who took charge in the absence of manager Danny Bowers, admitted: “I take full responsibility. I could have been a lot more positive tactically when Newport went down to ten men.

“Both teams played at a slow pace and we controlled the majority of the game without really doing much. Fair play to Newport, they played a long, long time with ten men.”

Third-placed Newport – home to Christchurch in the Sydenhams Premier Division tonight – have a home tie against Amesbury Town in the next round.

The Sydenhams One club took an impressive scalp on Saturday, ousting top-flight outfit Hamworthy United 5-2 at the County Ground.

The score was 2-2 until the 82nd minute, but Amesbury staged a grandstand finale with three late goals.

Eddie Perrett netted two of them to complete his hat-trick and set up the other for sub Cameron Roach. Danny Finnigan was also on target, while Russell Cook and Callum Charlton scored for the Hammers. With 82 minutes on the clock Ward touched ball through to Perrett who jinked past the defence and slotted home .Three minutes later a ball forward to Perrett down the left and his low cross was met at the far post by Cameron Roach but the visitors weren’t finished with the premier division opponents and Ward’s ball to Finnigan was laid on to Perrett who made no mistake to complete his hat-trick and give Amesbury the 5-3 victory.
