Michael Carberry held his nerve as the Perth Scorchers won the Big Bash final - with a dramatic last-ball win against the Sydney Sixers.

Needing eight from the final over, the last of Brett Lee's career, the Hampshire batsman audaciously scooped the first ball over short fine-leg for four.

And he added three from the next two deliveries to level the scores at 147.

But then Lee bowled Coulter-Nile and Sam Whiteman with successive deliveries to take the tournament to the last ball at the Manuka Oval, Canberra.

No matter. Hampshire signing Yasir Arafat scored the winning run to mid-wicket, as Sixers captain Moises Henriques missed the chance of a run out, to complete a thrilling four-wicket win.

"Michael Carberry played an unbelievable innings," said Scorchers captain Adam Voges, who played seven T20 games alongside Carberry for Hampshire in 2007.

Carberry, who finished on nine not out (seven balls), said: “This game never ceases to amaze!

"What a finish! Binga (Brett Lee) was right on the money, it could have gone either way, but I'm glad we got over the line.

"Brett was steaming up bowling yorkers, and there are a lot of long boundaries, so to pop him back over his head was going to be tough.

“With fine leg up, it was the only way to get him away and luckily it came off the middle of the bat.”

Carberry had a long conversation with Arafat, who will play T20 cricket for Hampshire this season, before the final ball.

“He had to get something on it and run, it was pretty straight forward at that stage,” he continued. “You have to get something on it and run. I'm just delighted we got over the line."

Brett Lee finished with 3-25 and so nearly a winner’s medal.

"I tried to block everything out and just run in and hit those pegs for one last time,” he said. "I thought I was on the money there but Arafat got it away and that's the game.”

At 38, he insists he will not be changing his mind about retirement.

"There's zero chance of me coming back to play in the Champions League, its time for a young bloke to come in."

Meanwhile, Hampshire can look forward to Arafat (1-37) playing in both limited-overs formats for the county this season.

"Yasir Arafat did a great job of finishing it off at the end. He's been a big part of our core bowling group that's really built pressure on the opposition in all of the BBL games this season."
