Sarisbury Athletic are through to the ECB national indoor six-a-side championship finals at Lord’s on Sunday week, March 15.

The Southern Electric Premier Division newcomers won the south regional finals, beating Essex club South Woodford and Sandwich Town to clinch a third visit to cricket’s headquarters in recent seasons.

Ricky Rawlins top scored with an unbeaten 39 as Sarisbury posted 90-5 off 12 overs in their Canterbury semi-final.

But their Essex Premier League opponents had no answer to the bowling of Joe Lovett (2-7) and Mark Miller (2-21) and were bundled out for a meagre 38.

Sarisbury’s regional final against Kent League side Sandwich Town – easy semi-final winners over Berkshire’s Theale & Tilehurst – was a predictably tighter affair.

The Hampshire indoor champions came out of the traps at rocket speed, with Matt Journeaux (30 not out) and Dave Banks (24) on fire.

Having posted 51-1 after six overs, Sarisbury were pegged back with the next four overs yielding only 18 runs.

But Sarisbury regained their momentum, smashing 29 runs off the final two overs to reach 98-3.

Benefitting from 16 runs, including eight wides, off their second over, Sandwich were well placed at 47-0 at the halfway mark.

But Sarisbury curbed the run flow and, at 73-3 with two overs left, Sandwich were 26 runs short of the target with time running out.

Journeaux wasted no time in finishing it, taking two wickets in five deliveries to bowl the Kent seasiders out for 80.

South Wilts, who won the west regional play-offs at Taunton, did not fare so well and lost by three wickets off the penultimate ball to St Austell.

The Pittman brothers, Sam (21) and Rob (20) top scored in South Wilts’ 88-4 – a total the Cornishmen overhauled with one ball to spare.
