Former Hampshire bowler David Balcombe ensured victory on his return to the Ageas Bowl – by starring with the bat for Surrey’s Second XI.

Balcombe, who returned to Surrey last year after nine seasons with Hampshire, made an unbeaten 22 from 15 balls to secure a four-wicket victory in the four-day friendly on the Ageas Bowl’s Nursery Ground.

Sean Terry’s 145 helped Hampshire to a second-innings 443 against an attack led by Stuart Meaker (3-65) that meant Surrey needed 317 to win.

Brad Wheal (2-52) was the pick of the bowlers in the final innings, but Balcombe hit three fours and a six to take Surrey to their target.

Former Hampshire wicketkeeper Adam Rouse made a 97-ball 74 as Hampshire totalled 384 in their first innings, which also included half-centuries for Joe Gatting (74), who was bowled by Balcombe (11-0-84-1), Lewis McManus (81).

The Second XI’s first competitive match of the season is a T20 contest against Sussex at Hove on May 5.
