Steven Davis has revealed his determination to get on the scoresheet before the season is out, after admitting his frustration at his lack of goals this season.

The midfielder, who is still searching for his first of the campaign, confessed his disappointment at missing three good opportunities in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham.

Davis has again performed to an exceptionally high level this season, but agreed that his lack of goals is the one area of his game that is frustrating him.

“Yeah, I think so,” he said. “I think it sort of showed – you end up snatching at things and even the last one, my first touch and everything was good, but, obviously, just the final finish went missing, so it was really disappointing from that point of view.

“But I just need to keep trying to get in the right positions and hopefully one will fall.

“Whether it’s maybe a deflection or something just to get you going, you don’t really know.

“It’s frustrating from that point of view.”

The “last one” that Davis referred to came at the end of a slick move that involved Sadio Mane finding Graziano Pelle in the area, before the striker flicked a clever pass into the feet of the Northern Ireland captain.

Davis produced a sublime first touch to wrong-foot man and open up space, but misfired as he aimed for the far top corner from about ten yards out.

He had earlier sliced a first-time effort from the edge of the area wide, before dragging a shot from 18 yards past the post after sniffing out space with a driving run.

“It’s important for midfielders to chip in with goals and disappointing I haven’t got one to this stage, but I’ll just need to keep trying to get in the right areas and hopefully one will fall for me,” said the 30-year-old.

“It was the same for Prowsey (James Ward-Prowse) as well, who took his chance from the penalty spot the other week, so it’s important as midfielders we keep trying to do that.”

Davis, who felt Saints deserved more than a point against European rivals Tottenham, added: “Of the three opportunities I had, one in the first half and the two in the second half, the build-up play and the football we played to create those chances was really good, and it’s just frustrating that we couldn’t finish them.

“But I thought in the second half we continued to keep on pressing them and to try and get that third goal and, obviously, we were unlucky with Jose’s header at the very end as well.”
