TOBY Alderweireld bemoaned the amount of times Saints were caught offside, as he admitted the team missed a golden opportunity to beat Manchester City.

Ronald Koeman's side ended a memorable season on a down note, losing 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, although the scoreline didn't tell the whole story of the match.

Saints played some excellent football and, at times, threatened to open City up, but they were often guilty of a slight lack of composure right at the last moment.

“I think we’re frustrated, because if there was a day we could win in City it was today I think," said Alderweireld.

"We were 15 times offside I think, so we have to play that better.

"We play very well to the last pass. It was always offside. I think we could create a lot more if we had quality in front today."

He added: “Normally you know before the game if you go Man City away it’s going to be difficult – you know that.

"But I felt like today if we get a little bit more – I can’t explain it well – if we get a little bit more quality in front, like the right pass, not 15 times offside, then we could have created more and maybe win."

Despite his disappointment, Alderweireld agreed that finishing seventh represented an impressive season for Saints.

“Of course, it’s fantastic," said the 26-year-old on-loan Atletico Madrid player, whose future is one of the big questions of the summer.

"I hope we get the little bit special if Arsenal win the FA Cup, so we can go to Europe. I really hope that.

"Today it’s just, me personally, I’m a little frustrated, because I think we let an opportunity go for winning here – at least a point."
