THERE will be a cross in the register next to Oli Bromby’s name for next week’s English Schools’ Track & Field Championships in Gateshead (July 10/11).

But the Richard Taunton College speed machine, winner of intermediate boys’ gold in 2014, has a genuinely good excuse for playing hookey.

He will be otherwise engaged at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia (July 15-19), representing Great Britain in the 100 metres.

Hampshire’s two other gold medal winners from last term will be on the bus to the north-east, however, as part of Hampshire’s 60-strong squad.

Sherfield’s Owen Richardson will defend the inter boys’ 400m title, while The Clere’s Holly Mills is leaping up into the inter girls’ age-group after striking junior girls’ long jump gold last year.
